anesthetic: nested sampling visualisation [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Open Source Software, 2019, 4(37), 1414, 2019
anesthetic is a Python package for processing nested sampling runs, and will be useful for any scientist or statistician who uses nested sampling software. anesthetic unifies many existing tools and techniques in an extensible framework that is intuitive for users familiar with the standard Python packages, namely NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib and pandas.

The thermodynamics of general and local anesthesia [PDF]

open access: yesBiophys. J. 2014, 106: 2143-2156, 2014
General anesthetics are known to cause depression of the freezing point of transitions in biomembranes. This is a consequence of ideal mixing of the anesthetic drugs in the membrane fluid phase and exclusion from the solid phase. Such a generic law provides physical justification of the famous Meyer-Overton rule.

Stabilizing membrane domains antagonizes n-alcohol anesthesia [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, Volume 111, Issue 3, 9 August 2016, Pages 537-545, 2016
Diverse molecules induce general anesthesia with potency strongly correlated both with their hydrophobicity and their effects on certain ion channels. We recently observed that several n-alcohol anesthetics inhibit heterogeneity in plasma membrane derived vesicles by lowering the critical temperature ($T_c$) for phase separation.

THE ADMINISTRATION OF ANESTHETICS. [PDF]

open access: greenJAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1898
A man who desires to study medicine can find many places in Chicago where they will undertake to teach him, but I do not know of any place where they will teach him to administer anesthetics. There are many places where he may learn but no place where any provision is made for properly teaching the subject. The student is not left to his own resources

Characterization of Large-Scale Functional Brain Networks During Ketamine-Medetomidine Anesthetic Induction [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
Several experiments provide evidence that specialized brain regions functionally interact and reveal that the brain processes and integrates information in a specific and structured manner. Networks can be applied to model brain functional activities, providing means to characterize and quantify this structured form of organization.

Perioperative and anesthetic deaths: toxicological and medico legal aspects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background: Anesthesia has become safer during decades, though there is still a preventable mortality; the complexity of medical and surgical interventions, increasingly older and sicker patients, has created a host of new hazards in anesthesiology.

Effect of Electroencephalography-Guided Anesthetic Administration on Postoperative Delirium Among Older Adults Undergoing Major Surgery: The ENGAGES Randomized Clinical Trial

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 2019
Importance Intraoperative electroencephalogram (EEG) waveform suppression, often suggesting excessive general anesthesia, has been associated with postoperative delirium.
