Diversity and Plasticity of Hydraulic Traits Across a Relative Moisture Supply Gradient: Results From Multiple Common Gardens

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Maintaining cellular hydration is essential for plant metabolic activity and carbon gain. Plants typically maintain hydration through efficiency of water transport networks, the ability to avoid network disruption, and retention of water via accumulation of osmotica. Given their global domain and their enduring presence across geological eras,

Plant endemism of the Balkan high‐mountain fens: a community‐level synthesis and their climate change perspective

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
Balkan high‐mountain fens harbour unique endemic plant communities, with a west‐to‐east compositional gradient and local richness primarily shaped by palaeoclimate. As these fens have already experienced drier, warmer summers than at present, they may withstand climate change if actively and effectively protected. Abstract The phenomenon of Balkan high‐

The impact of seasonal variations in inner bark width and xylem growth on irreversible annual stem diameter measurements

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
The seasonal variation in inner bark width differed from that of xylem growth, indicating that xylem phenology cannot be reliably assessed without cellular observations. Abstract To better interpret continuous xylem growth measurements from dendrometers, we evaluated how the widths of developing xylem and phloem, along with seasonal trends in inner ...

Mixed‐vertebrate pollination traits and pollinators of Haageocereus acranthus (Cactaceae) in a lomas desert ecosystem of coastal Peru

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
In a lomas desert ecosystem of coastal Peru, the columnar cactus Haageocereus acranthus shows traits and interactions consistent with a mixed‐vertebrate pollination system (hummingbirds and bats), with no detectable differences between flower colour morphotypes in either traits or interactions.

Almost 200 years of anthocyanin research: What we know, what we assume and what remains unknown

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
Nearly 200 years of anthocyanin research reveal a well‐understood anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway. However, there are still open questions regarding its evolution, functions and ecological significance. Abstract Flavonoids are frequently presented as health‐beneficial plant metabolites, and their subclass anthocyanins is best known for striking flower

A dual pollination strategy combining perfume attraction and food deception in Galeandra blanchetii E.S. Rand (Orchidaceae)

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
Galeandra blanchetii exhibits a dual‐attraction strategy: male euglossine bees are lured by floral scents as a resource, while both sexes are deceived by non‐existent nectar. Pollination only occurs when bees enter the spur to search for nectar, highlighting an evolutionary transition towards the perfume flower syndrome in Catasetinae.
