Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) were developed to providean alternative approach to interrupting the renin–angiotensin system(RAS), which was pharmacologically distinct from that ofangiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. By selectivelyblocking the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor, ARBs werethought to offer the potential for more ...

Angiotensin receptor antagonists
Abstract The renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS) is activated in patients with heart failure and contributes to many of the detrimental effects seen in these patients. Antagonists to the angiotensin II type-1 (AT1)-receptor (ARBs) provide a pharmacologically different mechanism of inhibiting the RAAS to ACE inhibitors.Roy S. Gardner +3 more

The peptide angiotensin(Ang) II exerts hemodynamic, and renal as well as cardiovascular structural effects. Multiple lines of evidence have suggested the existence of several Ang II receptor subtypes. Recent evidence has revealed that the functions of the AT1 and AT2 receptors are mutually antagonistic in various cells and tissues.
