Motion planning for anguilliform locomotion

IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation, 2003
We investigate issues of control and motion planning for a biomimetic robotic system. Previous work has shown that a successful approach to solving the motion planning problem is to decouple it into the two subproblems of trajectory generation (feedforward controls) and feedback regulation.

An elastic rod model for anguilliform swimming

Journal of Mathematical Biology, 2006
We develop a model for anguilliform (eel-like) swimming as an elastic rod actuated via time-dependent intrinsic curvature and subject to hydrodynamic drag forces, the latter as proposed by Taylor (in Proc Roy Proc Lond A 214:158-183, 1952). We employ a eometrically exact theory and discretize the resulting nonlinear partial differential evolution both ...

Phylogeny of moray eels (Anguilliformes: Muraenidae), with a revised classification of true eels (Teleostei: Elopomorpha: Anguilliformes)

Mitochondrial DNA, 2012
The family Muraenidae is one of the largest and most recognizable eel groups. Moray eels are key components of marine ecosystems but their relationships remain poorly understood. The phylogenetic relationships of the morays are examined herein using mitochondrial 12S and 16S sequence data, totaling 1673 bp for 139 taxa.

Hydrodynamic Parameter Estimation for an Anguilliform-inspired Robot

Journal of Intelligent & Robotic Systems, 2020
This paper presents an optimization-based approach to estimate the hydrodynamic parameters namely drag and added mass coefficients from free-running experiments conducted on an in-house developed Anguilliform-inspired robot. The objective of the optimization problem is to estimate the hydrodynamic parameters that minimize the differences between the ...

Anguilliform Swimming Performance of an Eel-Inspired Soft Robot

Soft Robotics, 2022
In this article, we propose a soft eel robot design using soft pneumatic actuators that mimic eel muscles. Four pairs of soft actuators are used to construct the eel robot body. Pulse signals with suitable shifting phases are utilized to control delivery of compressed air to the actuators in sequence to create a sinusoidal wave ...
