The tumor microenvironment is a dynamic, multifaceted complex system of interdependent cellular, biochemical, and biophysical components. Three‐dimensional in vitro models of the tumor microenvironment enable a better understanding of these interactions and their impact on cancer progression and therapeutic resistance.

We generated and characterized clear cell renal cell carcinoma models using the patient‐derived RCC243 cell line—including cell culture, orthotopic, and metastatic tumors—via single‐cell RNA‐sequencing for comparisons between models and patient tumor datasets.

Liver‐specific knockout of N6‐methyladenosine (m6A) methyltransferase METTL3 significantly accelerated hepatic tumor initiation under various oncogenic challenges, contrary to the previously reported oncogenic role of METTL3 in liver cancer cell lines or xenograft models. Mechanistically, METTL3 deficiency reduced m6A deposition on Manf transcripts and

Cerebral organoids were employed as a novel model to explore the neurotoxicity of soman. Soman inhibited acetylcholinesterase activity, increased cell apoptosis and upregulated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markers glucose‐regulated protein 78 (GRP78), activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) and C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP).

To Animate or Not to Animate, that is the Question [PDF]

When is an animal, not an animal?
Journal of Biological Education, 1981The concepts of ‘animal’ held by some New Zealand primary, secondary, and tertiary students were explored using both an interview and multiplechoice survey approach. The results indicate that many students of all ages have a restricted concept of ‘animal’ compared with that of a biologist. The implications of these results for teaching are discussed.

Animal Research (See Animal Ethics; Animal Welfare; Animal Cloning)
2021The use of animals in scientific research appears to be almost as old as the beginning of medicine. For example, vivisection is already reported in the Corpus Hippocraticum (4th to 1st century BC) and by Galen (2nd century). The use of animals was strongly revived in the Renaissance.
