Comparison of blood parameters in two genetically different groups of horses for functional longevity in show jumping

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics
IntroductionIn order to find early selection criteria to improve the longevity of show jumping horses, a specific protocol was designed.MethodsBefore entering competition, young horses selected from extreme stallions for longevity were measured for many ...

Using oocytes and embryos in ex-situ conservation of animal genetic resources (a review) [PDF]

open access: yesAgroznanje, 2012
In the last few decades, farm animal genetic diversity has been rapidly declining. Therefore, it is in the interest of the international community to conserve livestock genetics.

Organoids in pediatric cancer research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Sub-strains of Drosophila Canton-S differ markedly in their locomotor behavior [v1; ref status: indexed, http://f1000r.es/3is]

open access: yesF1000Research, 2014
We collected five sub-strains of the standard laboratory wild-type Drosophila melanogaster Canton Special (CS) and analyzed their walking behavior in Buridan's paradigm using the CeTrAn software.

Specific gastrointestinal microbiota profiles in Chinese Tan sheep are associated with lauric acid content in muscle

open access: yesBMC Microbiology, 2023
The biological mechanisms underlying meat quality remain unclear. Currently, many studies report that the gastrointestinal microbiota is essential for animal growth and performance.

On the Genetic Manipulation of Animals

open access: yesBetween the Species: An Online Journal for the Study of Philosophy and Animals, 1985
While I agree with Pluhar's sentiment that genetically engineered animals may well be treated inhumanely, as are most animals in factory farms, I disagree with her belief that genetic engineering, specifically transgenic manipulation, "is not in itself cruel, nor need it lead to cruelty." If we accept by definition that animal cruelty is unnatural ...
