The effect of rural-to-urban migration on renal function in an Indian population: cross-sectional data from the Hyderabad arm of the Indian Migration Study. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
BACKGROUND: Urban migration is associated with an increased risk of hypertension, obesity and diabetes in Indian migrants. This study assessed the relationship between internal migration and renal function in the Hyderabad arm of the Indian Migration ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Juvenile salmon habitat use drives variation in growth and highlights vulnerability to river fragmentation

open access: yesEcosphere, 2022
Widespread stream network fragmentation from dams and culverts has altered habitat connectivity in river ecosystems and presents an acute threat to migratory fish.

Nathusius’ bats, Pipistrellus nathusii, bypass mating opportunities of their own species, but respond to foraging heterospecifics on migratory transit flights

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2023
In late summer, migratory bats of the temperate zone face the challenge of accomplishing two energy-demanding tasks almost at the same time: migration and mating.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Distant Landmarks Used for Navigation by Homing Pigeons

open access: yesLife
How animals navigate using single or several sensory modalities remains disputed. Humans often use distant landmarks such as mountain peaks as visual cues for orientation.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

abmR: An R package for agent‐based model analysis of large‐scale movements across taxa

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, 2023
Agent‐based modelling (ABM) shows promise for animal movement studies. However, a robust, open‐source and spatially explicit ABM coding platform is currently lacking.

Experiments on the Vertical Migration of Plankton Animals [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 1947
Experiments were made with apparatus, largely of glass, specially designed to study the vertical movements of plankton animals under as natural conditions as possible at various depths in the sea. The animals were introduced in darkness into the apparatus which was kept covered with a black clothuntil it was lowered below the surface so that from the ...

Migration pattern of silver eel (Anguilla anguilla, L.) in an obstructed river system. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The downstream migration of European silver eels in the River Frémur was examined to determine the potential effects of the numerous migration barriers that exist on waterways in western France.
