Cytogenetics in Animal Production

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 1979
Abstract Development of cytological techniques over the last 20 yr enables accurate and detailed observations of the chromosomes of mammals and birds. Various applications for cytogenetic methodology in animal science research are suggested. Much of the pregnancy wastage in farm animals may be caused by abnormal chromosome complements of afflicted ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

THE DESEASONALIZATION OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION [PDF]

open access: yes
We document the deseasonalization of animal production in the US and Europe. Hypotheses on causes and consequences of this trend are advanced. They pertain to feed costs, changes in animal productivity and cost fixity of the underlying technology ...

Consumer attitudes towards production diseases in intensive production systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Many members of the public and important stakeholders operating at the upper end of the food chain, may be unfamiliar with how food is produced, including within modern animal production systems.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Modern Animal Production and Animal Welfare [PDF]

open access: yesAgricultural Engineering, 2018
AbstractThe aim of the paper is to discuss the links between modern livestock production, including its techniques and concentration, with animal welfare requirements. Modern livestock production is related to modern facilities, precise livestock production, as well as intensive and high stocking density.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Progesterone-responsive vaginal leiomyoma and hyperprogesteronemia due to ovarian luteoma in an older bitch

open access: yesBMC Veterinary Research, 2020
Background This is the first report about a vaginal leiomyoma concomitant with an ovarian luteoma in a bitch. Case presentation A 11-year-old intact female Labrador retriever was referred because of anuria, constipation and protrusion of a vaginal mass ...
