Organic anion transporters were first identified in intestine, liver, and kidney based on extensive studies of membrane transport phenomena mainly of xenobiotics. Recent advances in membrane transport studies with the use of molecular biological approaches have confirmed the participation of such carrier-mediated transport in these tissues and the ...

Substrate anion transport in mitochondria
Biochimie, 1973Summary The transport of substrate anions across the mitochondrial inner membrane is mediated by specific translocators which bring about a 1:1 exchange between specific anion pairs. The translocators for adenine nucleotides, phosphate, dicarboxylates, tricarboxylates and α-oxoglutarate have been well-characterized.

Anion transport and membrane morphology
The Journal of Membrane Biology, 1976Freeze-fracture electronmicroscopy has been used to examine the membrane ultrastructure of human red blood cells in the presence of inhibitors of chloride exchange. The extent of inhibition was correlated with a decrease of intramembrane particle density on the B-fracture face.

ANION TRANSPORT MECHANISMS IN NEURONS*
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1980Evidence has been presented and reviewed to show that chloride is often not in electrochemical equilibrium across neuronal cell membranes. An ATP- and sodium-dependent uptake mechanism has been described for the squid giant axon. Finally, the role of chloride in the maintenance of pH1 has been discussed. Present evidence favors a net chloride extrusion

From Anion Receptors to Transporters
Accounts of Chemical Research, 2011Cystic fibrosis is the most well-known of a variety of diseases termed channelopathies, in which the regulation of ion transport across cell membranes is so disrupted that the threshold of a pathology is passed. The human toll exacted by these diseases has led a number of research groups, including our own, to create compounds that mediate ion ...

Artificial Anion Transporters in Bilayer Membranes
Current Drug Discovery Technologies, 2008Anion transport across phospholipid membrane is a typical supramolecular function involving dynamic recognition of the substrate during the whole translocation process. Supramolecular chemists, taking inspiration by the natural anion transporters, have designed artificial systems able to mimic, at the functional level, several features of the natural ...

Hepatic Sinusoidal Membrane Transport of Anionic Drugs Mediated by Anion Transporter Npt 1
The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, 1998The purpose of our study was to establish the localization of the anion transporter Npt1 in liver and the relevance of Npt1 to carrier-mediated hepatic transport of beta-lactam antibiotics. Immunocytochemical examination of mouse liver with antiserum for Npt1 showed basolateral (sinusoidal) membrane localization.

Renal transport of organic anions
Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, 1998This review deals with the different transport mechanisms mediating the apical and basolateral transport of organic anions, all of which are restricted to the proximal tubule. Several transport mechanisms, such as the para-aminohippurate basolateral transporter and the apical proton coupled di- and tripeptide transporter have been cloned, and their ...
