Simulation of sample testing under compression with the help of finite-element model of rocks being broken [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Purpose of the paper is to develop mathematical model describing nature of argillous and salt samples under compression and to make available microdefects using finite-element method. Methods.

The Influences of Small Vibratory Stresses and Anisotropy of Grains on SCC Strength in Aluminum Alloys : Solid-Mechanics, Strength of Materials

open access: yes, 1987
The influences of small vibratory stresses and the loading axis against grain flow directions on the initiation behavior of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) were investigated in high-strength aluminum alloys sensitive to active path corrosion type SCC ...

Influence of Clays on Borehole Stability : a Literature Survey Part One: Occurence of Drilling Problems. Physico-Chemical Description of Clays and of Their Interaction with Fluids Influence des argiles sur la stabilité des parois de puits : revue bibliographique. Première partie : les problèmes rencontrés lors du forage dans les argiles. Description physico-chimique des argiles et de leur interaction avec les fluides

open access: yesOil & Gas Science and Technology, 2006
This survey of literature was undertaken by ARTEP- the French Research Association for Oil Exploration and Production Techniques- at the beginning of STAR (=STabilité des ARgiles), a project on the influence of clays on borehole stability.

Lagrangian velocity and acceleration correlations of large inertial particles in a closed turbulent flow [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We investigate the response of large inertial particle to turbulent fluctuations in a inhomogeneous and anisotropic flow. We conduct a Lagrangian study using particles both heavier and lighter than the surrounding fluid, and whose diameters are ...

Charting Hydrogen Bond Anisotropy.

open access: yesJournal of Chemical Theory and Computation, 2019
Hydrogen bond (HB) is an essential interaction in countless phenomena, and regulates the chemistry of life. HBs are characterized by two main features, strength and directionality, with a high degree of heterogeneity across different chemical groups ...

Elastic bending modulus of monolayer graphene [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
An analytic formula is derived for the elastic bending modulus of monolayer graphene based on an empirical potential for solid-state carbon atoms. Two physical origins are identified for the non-vanishing bending stiffness of the atomically thin graphene

Biomechanical analysis of tension-compression asymmetry, anisotropy and heterogeneity of bone reconstruction in response to periprosthetic fracture repair

open access: yesJournal of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University: Series Medicine, 2019
Introduction. Bone repair after periprosthetic fracture is a critical issue in orthopedics. Objectives. So there is a need for research to provide new medical solutions, especially in the context of population ageing in the Ukraine.

Transverse fracture properties of green wood and the anatomy of six temperate tree species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
© Institute of Chartered Foresters, 2016. All rights reserved. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of wood anatomy and density on the mechanics of fracture when wood is split in the radial-longitudinal (RL) and tangential-longitudinal (TL)

Dynamic Precipitation during High‐Pressure Torsion of a Magnesium–Manganese Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An ultrafine‐grained alloy is produced by high‐pressure torsion of solutionized Mg–1.35 wt% Mn. Precipitation of nanometer‐scale Mn particles during deformation provides pinning sites. This prevents the formation of a bimodal grain structure and results in a finer grain size than for pure Mg.

On the capillary stress tensor in wet granular materials

open access: yes, 2011
This paper presents a micromechanical study of unsaturated granular media in the pendular regime, based upon numerical experiments using the discrete element method, compared to a microstructural elastoplastic model.
