Both books I review in this issue deal with annoying behavior. One explores "stupid programmer tricks" to find truths about technical leadership. The other looks at unfortunate design choices in the leading operating system and sees annoyances to ameliorate rather than obstacles to curse.

At the present developed procedures of evaluation of annoyance of low frequency noise (LFN) on human and occupational health are based on international standards, ISO 7196 and ISO 9612. These standards are based on levels of thresholds of the human auditory system and subjective observations of vibrations of human body impacted by infrasound waves.

HE: Where can I find a pencil? SHE: In the drawer beside the fridge. HE [RETURNING]: Where did you say the pencil is? SHE [STOPPING HER WORK, ENUNCIATING EACH WORD]: I said it’s in the drawer beside the fridge. HE [RETURNING ONCE MORE]: What color is it? SHE [CLEARLY IMPATIENT]: I don’t know. Yellow? It’s the only pencil in the drawer!

Noise annoyance susceptibility
Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1972Abstract The variations of annoyance due to tape recorded noise have been investigated in a group of 34 normal hearing subjects. It has been found that there are significant differences between subjects in their rating of three different types of noise, 20 s samples of which were played at levels varying from 55–95 dBA.

The effects of sound on man are reviewed with emphasis on the physiological reaction mechanisms and the ultimate stress reaction. It is seen that energy related noise levels are poor predictors for the reactions in man as noise is always interpreted in the central nervous system, generating secondary and tertiary reactions that are not controlled by ...

Annoyance depends directory on the sound pressure level (SPL) when sounds are roughly equivalent in other attributes, such as timbre and duration. Therefore, a lot of efforts have been spent on noise reduction technologies in relation to reducing sound exposure level.

Cognitive variables in tinnitus annoyance
British Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1988Two new questionnaires were devised to investigate dimensions of complaint about tinnitus. Following a factor analysis of data provided by a sample of tinnitus patients who were administered the first questionnaire, the second questionnaire was developed. This included questions concerning coping attitudes and beliefs about tinnitus. The results of the

Annoyance accumulation modeling in a community noise annoyance expert system
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1998When the state of the sound environment in a region is monitored by tracing the percentage of people who are annoyed by noise, simulation models for community noise annoyance are needed. They allow, for example, the prediction of the impact of various noise control measures.
