Quota concentration in the New Zealand fishery: Annual catch entitlement and the small fisher
Marine Policy, 2011Abstract New Zealand's quota management system (QMS) was introduced in 1986 to enhance the sustainability of New Zealand's fishery. This paper examines trends in quota and catch share concentration across a range of important fish stocks. It demonstrates that continuing concentration is occurring in the ownership of quota for deepwater species.

The relationship between the annual catch of bigeye tuna and climate factors and its prediction
IntroductionIn order to explore the impact of climate factors on bigeye tuna catch, monthly data of nine climate factors, including El Niño-related indices (Niño1 + 2, Niño3, Niño4, and Niño3.4), Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), North Pacific Index (NPI), and global sea–air ...

Annual Catch of Bowhead Whales by Eskimos at Point Barrow, Alaska, 1928-1960
Journal of Mammalogy, 1963The number of bowhead whales ( Balaena mysticetus ) taken at Barrow, Alaska, each year from 1928 to 1960 averages 5.8 whales per year. The lengths and dates of capture are given for most of the whales taken in the spring seasons since 1954. Most (72%) of the whales were taken in mid-May.

Suitable long term species-specific catch rate and biological data are seldom available for large shark species, particularly where historical commercial logbook reporting has been poor. However, shark control programs can provide suitable data from gear that consistently fishes nearshore waters all year round.

A probability-based approach to setting annual catch levels.
2008The requirement of setting annual catch limits to prevent overfishing has been added to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Reauthorization Act of 2006 (MSRA). Because this requirement is new, a body of applied scientific practice for deriving annual catch limits and accompanying targets does not yet exist.

Abstract The coastal waters of Northwest Africa (Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal) support a large fishery on small pelagic fish. Super-trawlers from the European Union, mainly of Dutch origin, have exploited these resources since 1996, in particular off Mauritania.

The international composition of the whaling fleets that sought Balaena mysticetus north of Canada before 1915 has long been a deterrent to the compilation of a complete set of voyage and catch data. Using unpublished whaling logbooks and journals, manuscript annual summaries of Dutch and British whaling, and other sources, the author assembles data ...
