Sexual selection and predation drive the repeated evolution of stridulation in Heteroptera and other arthropods

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 98, Issue 3, Page 942-981, June 2023., 2023
ABSTRACT Acoustic and substrate‐borne vibrations are among the most widely used signalling modalities in animals. Arthropods display a staggering diversity of vibroacoustic organs generating acoustic sound and/or substrate‐borne vibrations, and are fundamental to our broader understanding of the evolution of animal signalling.

The oldest dairoidid crab (Decapoda, Brachyura, Parthenopoidea) from the Eocene of Spain

open access: yesPapers in Palaeontology, Volume 9, Issue 3, May/June 2023., 2023
Abstract Eubrachyurans, or ‘higher’ true crabs, are the most speciose group of decapod crustaceans and have a rich fossil record extending into the Early Cretaceous. However, most extant families are first found in the fossil record in the Palaeogene, and particularly in the Eocene.

Fine‐scale diversity of prey detected in humpback whale feces

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
We investigated the prey consumed by humpback whales in three heterogenous regions in southern British Columbia, Canada, using opportunistic faecal sampling, microscopy, and DNA metabarcoding of 14 faecal samples. Fish including Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii), hake (Merluccius productus), and eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus) were the most common ...

Novel gene rearrangement in the mitochondrial genome of Coenobita brevimanus (Anomura: Coenobitidae) and phylogenetic implications for Anomura

open access: yesGenomics, 2020
The complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) can indicate phylogenetic relationships among organisms, as well as useful information about the process of molecular evolution and gene rearrangement mechanisms. However, knowledge on the complete mitogenome of Coenobitidae (Decapoda: Anomura) is quite scarce.

Mesogalathea ardua sp. nov., a new species of squat lobster (Decapoda, Galatheidae) from the Upper Jurassic olistolith at Velika Strmica (Dolenjska, Slovenia)

open access: yesGeologija, 2020
A new species of squat lobster, Mesogalathea ardua sp. nov., is described on the basis of newly collected dorsal carapaces from an Upper Jurassic reefal limestone olistolith at Velika Strmica.

Local olfactory interneurons provide the basis for neurochemical regionalization of olfactory glomeruli in crustaceans

open access: yesJournal of Comparative Neurology, Volume 530, Issue 9, Page 1399-1422, June 2022., 2022
Central olfactory pathway in the brain of the hermit crabs Pagurus bernhardus and Coenobita clypeatus: summary of glomerular structure and neurochemistry. Abstract The primary olfactory centers of metazoans as diverse as arthropods and mammals consist of an array of fields of dense synaptic neuropil, the olfactory glomeruli.

A first report of decapod crustaceans (Anomura and Brachyura) from Laje de Santos: a no-take marine reserve in the southeast coast of Brazil

open access: yesRevista Mexicana de Biodiversidad, 2022
This study represents an unprecedented effort to assess the diversity of rocky infralittoral decapod Brachyura and Anomura from the Laje de Santos Marine State Park, a preserved and protected area along the southeastern Brazilian coast. The samples were

The dynamic influence of methane seepage on macrofauna inhabiting authigenic carbonates

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 12, Issue 10, October 2021., 2021
Abstract Methane seeps are highly productive deep‐sea ecosystems reliant on chemosynthetic primary production. They are increasingly affected by direct human activities that threaten key ecosystem services. Methane seepage often generates precipitation of authigenic carbonate rocks, which host diverse microbes, and a dynamic invertebrate community.

Sexual dimorphism in Aegla marginata (Decapoda: Anomura) [PDF]

open access: yesNauplius, 2012
A study on sexual dimorphism in Aegla marginata was conducted using geometric morphometric methods. The carapace of 47 females and 75 males and the left and right cheliped propodus of 29 females and 40 males were analyzed. Eighteen landmarks were established in the carapace and 10 in the cheliped propodus.

Food web structure in relation to environmental drivers across a continental shelf ecosystem

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 66, Issue 6, Page 2563-2582, June 2021., 2021
Abstract Quantification of the physical and biological factors that influence the spatial structuring of food webs is central to inform effective resource management. We used baseline‐corrected stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) of 63 invertebrate and fish to investigate food web structure across a continental shelf gradient—the Celtic Sea Shelf in ...
