Occurence of larval Culicidae (Diptera) in water retained in Aquascypha hydrophora (Fungus: Stereaceae) in Central Amazônia, Brazil

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2001
The community structure of insects, especially mosquito larvae, in water held in the fungus Aquascypha hydrophora (Berk.) Reid (Stereaceae) is reported.

Faunal richness and the checklist of Indian mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) [PDF]

open access: yesCheck List, 2014
A review of published studies revealed that the Indian mosquito fauna comprises 393 species in 49 genera and 41 subgenera. The subfamily Anophelinae contains 61 species in one genus followed by Culicinae with 332 species in 11 tribes and 48 genera.

Change in Composition of the Anopheles Gambiae Complex and its Possible Implications for the Transmission of Malaria and Lymphatic Filariasis in North-Eastern Tanzania. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A dramatic decline in the incidence of malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum infection in coastal East Africa has recently been reported to be paralleled (or even preceded) by an equally dramatic decline in malaria vector density, despite absence of ...

Systematic studies on Anopheles galvaoi Causey, Deane & Deane from the subgenus Nysssorhynchus blanchard (Diptera: Culicidae)

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2002
Anopheles galvaoi, a member of the subgenus Nyssorhynchus, is redescribed based on morphological characters of the adults male and female, fourth-instar larva and pupa. Female, male genitalia, larval and pupal stages are illustrated.

Universal primers for the amplification and sequence analysis pf actin-1 from diverse mosquito species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We report the development of universal primers for the reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) amplification and nucleotide sequence analysis of actin cDNAs from taxonomically diverse mosquito species.

Review of genetic diversity in malaria vectors (Culicidae: Anophelinae)

open access: yesInfection, Genetics and Evolution, 2012
We review previous studies on the genetic diversity of malaria vectors to highlight the major trends in population structure and demographic history. In doing so, we outline key information about molecular markers, sampling strategies and approaches to investigate the causes of genetic structure in Anopheles mosquitoes.

K‐mer‐Based Motif Analysis in Insect Species across Anopheles, Drosophila, and Glossina Genera and Its Application to Species Classification

open access: yesComputational and Mathematical Methods in Medicine, Volume 2019, Issue 1, 2019., 2019
Short k‐mer sequences from DNA are both conserved and diverged across species owing to their functional significance in speciation, which enables their use in many species classification algorithms. In the present study, we developed a methodology to analyze the DNA k‐mers of whole genome, 5′ UTR, intron, and 3′ UTR regions from 58 insect species ...

The Mosquitoes of Querétaro, Mexico: Distribution, Ecology, and Discovery of Shannoniana huasteca n. sp. (Diptera: Culicidae)

open access: yesDiversity, 2023
In order to document the diversity and distribution of mosquitoes inhabiting the Querétaro State of México, collection trips were conducted in all physiographic regions and sub-regions of the state (Sierra Madre Oriental, Central Plateau, and Neo ...

Positive selection in multiple salivary gland proteins of Anophelinae reveals potential targets for vector control [PDF]

open access: yesInfection, Genetics and Evolution, 2021
AbstractAnophelesis a genus belonging to the Culicidae family, which has great medical importance due to its role as a vector ofPlasmodium, the parasite responsible for malaria. FromAnopheles’functional genomics, great focus has been given to the salivary gland proteins (SGPs) group. This class of proteins is essential to blood-feeding behavior as they

Biological Control of Mosquito‐Borne Diseases: The Potential of Wolbachia‐Based Interventions in an IVM Framework

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Medicine, Volume 2018, Issue 1, 2018., 2018
People living in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world face an enormous health burden due to mosquito‐borne diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and filariasis. Historically and today, targeting mosquito vectors with, primarily, insecticide‐based control strategies have been a key control strategy against major mosquito‐borne diseases ...
