A scrutiny of the problem of pneumonia with the involved physiology of metabolism brings forth a new picture of the malady. Physiologists have opened fields of investigation which bear a close clinical relationship to the problem. In pneumonia there is an invasion of the body by pneumococci. The body reacts by forming antibodies to combat the invasion.

Anoxemia as the cause of death in shock
Medical Hypotheses, 1979The case is presented that both hemorrhagic and septic shock are due to an inadequate oxygen supply to mitochondria of vascular muscle cells in peripheral circulatory beds. Mitochondria disintegrate in the presence of severe hypoxia; this is a normal response which does not, per se, indicate generalized cell damage.

Effect of asphyxia and of anoxemia on the electrocardiogram
American Heart Journal, 1932Abstract Perfusion of coronary arteries of the dog with asphyxial blood produces changes in the electrocardiogram similar to but more marked than those produced by clamping the coronary arteries. These changes in the electrocardiogram are found to be comparable to those observed in coronary diseases in the human heart.

The author advances the concept that anoxemia, either in its general or restricted form, or both, is probably responsible for a considerable portion of "degenerative diseases," whose etiologic delineation has not yet been traced. It is necessary, he believes, to enlarge greatly the comprehension of the disordered circulatory states to include oxygen ...
