UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Emerging insights into CC and CXC chemokines and their receptors in Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The dual roles of CC and CXC chemokines in distinguishing active, latent, and subclinical tuberculosis were reviewed, along with an evaluation of their potential as diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets to advance precision medicine in tuberculosis management. The graphical abstract was generated with AI assistance (Gemini 3.0).

Antagonism and Relational Aesthetics

open access: yes, 2004
A critique of relational aesthetics, as theorized by Nicolas Bourriaud, and exemplified in the work of Rirkrit Tiravanija and Liam Gillick. Using Laclau and Mouffe\u27s theory of democracy as antagonism, the paper proposes instead a \u27relational ...

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

Irreversible non-specific antagonism

open access: yes, 2003
Thesis (Ph.D. (Pharmacology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004.Many irreversible antagonists are known to bind irreversibly to pharmacological receptors. However, few studies suggest that these irreversible antagonists may also display

5-HT2 antagonism indirectly increases motor unit discharge rate and cervicomedullary motor evoked potential amplitude during submaximal elbow flexions

open access: yes
Spinal motoneurone excitability is heavily regulated by serotonin via somatodendritic 5-HT2 receptors. However, the effects of these receptors on the excitability of motoneurones in the upper limb are not clearly understood.

Fungal-Bacterial Interactions in Health and Disease

open access: yesPathogens, 2019
Fungi and bacteria encounter each other in various niches of the human body. There, they interact directly with one another or indirectly via the host response. In both cases, interactions can affect host health and disease.

Mutant NPM1 in Acute Myeloid Leukemia Initiation and Maintenance

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
NPM1 mutations drive acute myeloid leukemia by acting as neomorphic transcriptional regulators that cooperate with Menin–MLL and XPO1 to sustain HOX/MEIS1 expression and block differentiation. Targeting these mutant‐specific transcriptional dependencies provides a rational therapeutic strategy for NPM1‐mutated AML.

Chemical antagonism between photodynamic agents and chemotherapeutics: mechanism and avoidance

open access: yes, 2017
We report chemical antagonism between photodynamic agents and chemotherapeutics and provide a solution to turn antagonism into synergism.
