An Overview of Antarctic Sea Ice in the Community Earth System Model Version 2, Part I: Analysis of the Seasonal Cycle in the Context of Sea Ice Thermodynamics and Coupled Atmosphere‐Ocean‐Ice Processes

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2021
We assess Antarctic sea ice climatology and variability in version 2 of the Community Earth System Model (CESM2) and compare it to that in the older CESM1 and (where appropriate) real‐world observations.

Snow on Antarctic sea ice

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, 2001
Snow on Antarctic sea ice plays a complex and highly variable role in air‐sea‐ice interaction processes and the Earth's climate system. Using data collected mostly during the past 10 years, this paper reviews the following topics: snow thickness and snow type and their geographical and seasonal variations; snow grain size, density, and salinity ...

Brief communication: Changing mid-twentieth century Antarctic sea ice variability linked to tropical forcing (Discussion Paper) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Satellite observations demonstrate Antarctic sea ice extent increased between late-1978 and 2015, with significant spatial and seasonal variability. Late spring retreat off George V Land is a major component of the observed increase, but the paucity of ...

Impact of Winds and Southern Ocean SSTs on Antarctic Sea Ice Trends and Variability

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2020
Antarctic sea ice extent (SIE) has slightly increased over the satellite observational period (1979 to the present) despite global warming. Several mechanisms have been invoked to explain this trend, such as changes in winds, precipitation, or ocean ...

Stress‐Induced Melting Controlled Failure Mechanisms of Methane Hydrate

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We study methane hydrate via nanoindentation and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), finding its regional melting and mechanical properties, challenging existing views on hydrogen‐bonded crystals. Abstract Methane hydrate, a kind of nonstoichiometric crystalline, attracted worldwide attentions as a promising substitute energy. Its Dissociation is thought

Variety and Distribution of Diatom-Based Sea Ice Proxies in Antarctic Marine Sediments of the Past 2000 Years

open access: yesGeosciences, 2022
Antarctic sea ice is an essential component of the global climate system. Reconstructions of Antarctic sea ice from marine sediment cores are a vital resource to improve the representation of Antarctic sea ice in climate models and to better understand ...

Observations of exponential wave attenuation in Antarctic sea ice during the PIPERS campaign

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology, 2020
Quantifying the rate of wave attenuation in sea ice is key to understanding trends in the Antarctic marginal ice zone extent. However, a paucity of observations of waves in sea ice limits progress on this front.

Tough and Temperature‐Resistant Material Based on Bombyx mori Silk Fibroin

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We propose a biomimetic “Hydration‐Crystallization Locking” (HCL) strategy inspired by Bombyx mori spinning to enhance silk fibroin (SF) performance in extreme temperatures. A flexible fibroin membrane (FFM) shows high strength, toughness, and shape retention under −196°C and 70°C.

A twenty-first century structural change in Antarctica’s sea ice system

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
From 1979 to 2016, total Antarctic sea ice extent experienced a positive trend with record winter maxima in 2012 and 2014. Record summer minima followed within the period 2017-2024, raising the possibility that the Antarctic sea ice system might be ...

The Antarctic sea ice cover from ICESat-2 and CryoSat-2: freeboard, snow depth, and ice thickness

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2020
. We offer a view of the Antarctic sea ice cover from lidar (ICESat-2) and radar (CryoSat-2) altimetry, with retrievals of freeboard, snow depth, and ice thickness that span an 8-month winter between 1 April and 16 November 2019.
