Abstract Surveys of caves of the Nullarbor Plain, Western Australia, revealed a remarkable assemblage of exceptionally well‐preserved mummified arthropods, comprising Araneae, Blattodea, Coleoptera and Chilopoda, all of which exhibit high levels of troglomorphism, lacking eyes and showing a number of other adaptations.

Glomerular organization in the antennal lobe of the oriental armyworm Mythimna separata
In insects, the number and specificity of antennal lobe glomeruli often reflect the number and diversity of expressed chemosensory genes, which are linked to its ecological niche and specific olfactory needs.

Sensory stimuli evoke temporally dynamic responses. Here the authors report that responses to odour onset and offset are orthogonally represented in the locust antennal lobe, differentially entrain oscillations, and propose a model in which they are ...

Role of histamine as a putative inhibitory transmitter in the honeybee antennal lobe
Background Odors are represented by specific spatio-temporal activity patterns in the olfactory bulb of vertebrates and its insect analogue, the antennal lobe.

Sensory memory for odors is encoded in spontaneous correlated activity between olfactory glomeruli [PDF]
Sensory memory is a short-lived persistence of a sensory stimulus in the nervous system, such as iconic memory in the visual system. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying olfactory sensory memory.

Abstract Austrocelis gen. nov. is described based on the following characters: maxillary palpus short and spatulate; setae of the head elongate; face protrudent, with the dorsal portion flattened and oblique, and ventral portion shorter and recessed towards the mouth opening; wing banded, with setae present on dorsal surface of vein R1; surstylus ...

Dynamic contrast enhancement and flexible odor codes
Sensory stimuli are encountered in multiple ways necessitating a flexible and adaptive neural population code for identification. Here, the authors show that the dynamics of odor coding in the locust antennal lobe varies with stimulus context so as to ...
