Anatomical Investigation Reveals a Second Olfactory System in Locusts. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Comp Neurol
We traced chemosensory pathways from locust palps through the central nervous system. Olfactory input from basiconic sensilla targets the glomerular lobe and accessory calyx, whereas gustatory input is restricted to gnathal circuits. Thus, the palp and antennal olfactory pathways form parallel but separate systems.

Antennal Morphology and Sexual Dimorphism of Antennal Sensilla in Callitettix versicolor (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae). [PDF]

open access: yesInsects, 2019
The rice spittlebug Callitettix versicolor (Fabricius) is an important pest of rice and maize in South Asia and causes severe economic damage. To provide background information for chemical ecology studies, the fine morphology of antennae and the types and distribution of the sensilla on the male and female antennae of Callitettix versicolor (Fabricius)

Bio‐Inspired Gradient Heterogeneous Architectures for Ultrasensitive and Robust Strain Sensors via Programmable Crack Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Inspired by the insect campaniform sensillum, a heterogeneous bilayer strain sensor is developed based on a unique impedance mismatch and three‐dimensional structural dynamic percolation strategy. The sensor enables real‐time multi‐joint teleoperation of three joints and the gripper using a six‐degree‐of‐freedom robotic‐arm platform.

Integrating vision, audition and olfaction traits: a roadmap for contrasting sensory ecologies of birds and rodents

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Sensory ecology seeks to understand how organisms detect and use information from their environment, yet comparative analyses across multiple sensory modalities remain rare. Here, we present a roadmap for contrasting the sensory ecologies of birds and rodents using surrogate morphological and acoustic traits associated with vision, audition, and ...

Impact of Environmental Microparticles on Insect Olfaction

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Terrestrial insects underpin key ecosystem services, including pollination, herbivory regulation, decomposition, nutrient cycling, and disease control. These functions depend on chemical communication that guides insects to food, mates, hosts, shelters, and oviposition sites while helping them avoid threats.

Comparative Antennal Morphology of Agriotes (Coleoptera: Elateridae), with Special Reference to the Typology and Possible Functions of Sensilla

open access: yesInsects, 2020
Species of the click-beetle genus Agriotes Eschscholtz are economically important crop pests distributed mainly in the Northern Hemisphere. They can inflict considerable damage on various field crops.

Ozone‐driven degradation of sex pheromone in Plutella xylostella: Implications for reproductive communication and mating success

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
In this study, we examined whether realistic ozone concentrations can interfere with sexual communication in the insect pest Plutella xylostella, the diamondback moth. Ozone exposure caused a degradation of pheromone components, leading to significant changes in blend composition and component ratios.

Scanning Electron Microscopy Characterization of the Antenna in Males of Mesomorphus villiger (Blanchard, 1853) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)

open access: yesDiversity
The tobacco ground beetle, Mesomorphus villiger (Blanchard, 1853) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), is a widely distributed species across Asia, Africa, and Australia, recognized for its economic importance as a pest of tobacco seedlings and other crops in ...

Larval character evolution in Holometabola (Insecta)

open access: yesCladistics, EarlyView.
Abstract Larvae, a novel type of immature stage, are a crucial innovation of the Holometabola. Larval features therefore provide key evidence for reconstructing evolutionary transformations in this megadiverse group. Here we present the first formal reconstruction of larval character evolution, using maximum parsimony and Bayesian ancestral‐state ...
