Effect of a post‐lambing nitrogen fertiliser addition on the performance of an intensive lowland sheep breeding operation

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, Volume 68, Issue 7, Page 2381-2395, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Despite the wealth of knowledge on the tactical use of nitrogen (N) fertilisers on pasture growth to address feed supply shortfall, remarkedly few studies have measured the impact on animal production. This study quantified the effect of a single post‐lambing N fertiliser addition to a legume‐based pasture on ewe and lamb performance and ...

The seasonality of gastrointestinal nematode species abundance (excluding Nematodirus) in sheep of different classes across New Zealand

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, Volume 68, Issue 7, Page 2436-2455, December 2025.
ABSTRACT A survey on nine farms across New Zealand assessed the seasonality and species composition of gastrointestinal nematodes in three sheep classes: lambs (<1 year), 2‐tooth ewes (1–2 years), and mixed age ewes (>2 years). Monthly faecal samples from each class underwent faecal egg counting and deep amplicon sequencing of cultured third‐stage ...

Antimicrobial prescribing guidelines for horses in Australia

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, Volume 103, Issue 12, Page 781-889, December 2025.
The growing problem of antimicrobial resistance also affects equine veterinarians with increasing frequency. Antimicrobial stewardship and responsible prescribing are essential for a future in which effective antimicrobials are available, as it is unlikely that new antimicrobials will become available for use in horses.

One dung to attract them all: Faeces attractiveness to dung beetles in herbivore multispecies pasture

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 50, Issue 6, Page 1172-1183, December 2025.
Dung beetle attractiveness varies among dung from different herbivores despite similar diets. The diversity of herbivores within an enclosure has a limited effect on dung beetle's diversity. Trophic resource availability could impact dung beetle trophic preferences in the long term.
