Antiaromatic Metallacyclopentatriene Complexes

Journal of the American Chemical Society
There is no report on the (anti)aromaticity of metallacyclopentatrienes, one kind of common and important five-membered metallacycles. This work presents the novel synthesis of osmium cis-biscarbene complexes and their oxidation to osmacyclopentatrienes. The osmacyclopentatriene unit is antiaromatic, as revealed by experimental and theoretical studies.

Releasing Antiaromaticity in Metal-Bridgehead Naphthalene

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2021
As a fundamental chemical property, aromaticity guides the synthesis of novel structures and materials. Replacing the carbon moieties of aromatic hydrocarbons with transition metal fragments is a promising strategy to synthesize intriguing organometallic counterparts with a similar aromaticity to their organic parents.

Dibenzoberylloles: antiaromatic s-block fluorene analogues

Chemical Communications, 2023
The first Lewis-base-stabilised dibenzoberylloles are prepared, one of which undergoes a complex but selective thermal conversion to a loosely bound beryllium-alkene π complex and two-electron reduction to an aromatic dianion.

Small Antiaromatic Rings

Angewandte Chemie International Edition in English, 1968
AbstractAccording to quantum mechanical calculations, systems with 4n π electrons ought to have anti‐aromatic character, i.e. be destabilized by resonance. This prediction is examined for the case of cyclopropenyl anion, the simplest system having 4n π electrons (n = 1).

Diazadioxa[8]circulenes: Planar Antiaromatic Cyclooctatetraenes

Chemistry – A European Journal, 2013
AbstractIn this paper we describe a new class of antiaromatic planar cyclooctatetraenes: the diazadioxa[8]circulenes. The synthesis was achieved by means of a new acid‐mediated oxidative dimerization of 3,6‐dihydroxycarbazoles to yield the diazadioxa[8]circulenes in high yields.

The antiaromaticity of cyclobutadiene

Tetrahedron, 1976
Abstract The antiaromaticity of cyclobutadiene systems is explored by means of theoretical studies on quinone electrochemical oxidation reactions.

Isophlorinoids: The Antiaromatic Congeners of Porphyrinoids

Chemical Reviews, 2016
Ever since the discovery of the porphyrin ring in "pigments of life", such as chlorophyll and hemoglobin, it has become a prime synthetic target for optoelectronic properties and in the design of metal complexes. During one such early expedition on the synthesis of porphyrin, Woodward proposed that condensing pyrrole with an aldehyde under acidic ...

Chemists make antiaromatic nanocage

C&EN Global Enterprise, 2019
What Jonathan Nitschke of the University of Cambridge and colleagues made shouldn’t be stable. But it is. After 2 years of work by postdoc Masahiro Yamashina, now at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, the team reports a nanosized cage with antiaromatic walls that boasts some peculiar magnetic properties (Nature 2019, DOI: 10.1038/s41586-019-1661-x). Fused Aromatic and Antiaromatic Smaragdyrin Dimers

Angewandte Chemie
AbstractSingly‐linked aromatic [22]smaragdyrin BF2 complex dimer was synthesized by the reductive coupling of 16‐brominated [22]smaragdyrin BF2 complex, which was oxidized to a stable diradical with PbO2. As the first example of fused smaragdyrin dimer, a fused [22]smaragdyrin BF2 complex dimer was synthesized by the oxidation of a CuCl‐BF2 complex ...
