L‐aspartate oxidase provides new insights into fumarate reduction in anaerobic darkness in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.

The effect of manuka honey on enterobacteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Manuka honey (Leptospermum scoparium) produced in New Zealand has been shown to exhibit substantial antibacterial activity against a broad range of pathogens causing wound infection, and is being used in wound management with excellent results.

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Improved antibacterial activity of a sustained-release biocompatible nanofilm for treating Pseudomonas aeruginosa wound infection in vitro and in vivo

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
ObjectivesThe primary goal of this research was to design a useful and biocompatible nanofilm system (CNF) encapsulating chlorhexidine acetate (CHX) for wounds that is endowed with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities and promotes wound healing.

Malformin A1–mediated cytotoxicity in ovarian cancer cells occurs through pyroptosis and autophagy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study investigated the effects of the natural compound Malformin A1 (MA1) on the cytoskeleton that regulates cell proliferation and migration. Disruption of the cytoskeleton can impair these processes and promote cancer cell death. MA1 disrupted cytoskeletal organization, induced DNA damage, inflammation, activated autophagy, and pyroptosis ...

A catechol-modified quaternized chitosan/PEG hydrogel for diabetic wound healing: synergistic effects of TGF-β3 delivery, angiogenesis, and antibacterial activity

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
BackgroundDiabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) represent a challenging chronic wound model, often plagued by biofilm formation that sustains inflammation and impedes healing.

Exploring the influence of lactoferrin on wound healing and related signaling pathways: a systematic review

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Lactoferrin promotes wound healing by activating MAPK, PI3K/Akt, and extracellular matrix pathways, enhancing fibroblast remodeling, proliferation, and re‐epithelialization. These mechanisms highlight its therapeutic potential in inflammation control, tissue repair, and remodeling.
