Non-leaching antimicrobial surfaces through polydopamine bio-inspired coating of quaternary ammonium salts or an ultrashort antimicrobial lipopeptide. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Bacterial fouling on surfaces significantly increases the resistance of bacteria toward antibiotics, which leads to medical complications and a corresponding financial burden.

Thinned-Young Apple Polyphenols Inhibit Halitosis-Related Bacteria Through Damage to the Cell Membrane

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
The thinned young apple is a by-product and is generally discarded in the orchard during fruit thinning. The polyphenol content of thinned young apples is about 10 times more than that of ripe apples.

Surface area or diameter – which factor really determines the antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles grown on TiO₂ coatings? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Titanium dioxide coatings were prepared on Si wafers using the sol–gel method. Four different types of coatings with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized.

Incorporation of Selenium into Sol–Gel‐Derived Bioactive Glass: Influence on Glass Structure, Bioactivity, and its Selective Cytotoxicity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Selenium was incorporated into a sol–gel‐derived bioactive glass to enable sustained therapeutic ion release. The selenium‐containing glass preserved bioactivity while selectively inducing cytotoxicity in osteosarcoma cells and maintaining osteoblastic viability.

Novel copper-containing ferrite nanoparticles exert lethality to MRSA by disrupting MRSA cell membrane permeability, depleting intracellular iron ions, and upregulating ROS levels

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2023
ObjectiveThe widespread use of antibiotics has inevitably led to the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), making treatment of this infection a serious challenge.
