Five hypertension intervention trials (HDFP, MRFIT, Australian National BP Study, IPPPSH, MRC) were analyzed for the effect of smoking on antihypertensive therapy and final outcome in coronary and all-cause mortality. In addition, an observational study of primary screenees for MRFIT was reviewed.
