Antimicrobial Peptides and Skin: A Paradigm of Translational Medicine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are small, cationic, amphiphilic peptides with broad-spectrum microbicidal activity against both bacteria and fungi. In mammals, AMPs form the first line of host defense against infections and generally play an important ...

Graphene Layers as Functional Biomaterials. From Fabrication and Characterization to Biological Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Graphene layers are fabricated on Cu foil and transferred onto glass substrates to form double‐ and multi‐layer G‐glass. Raman spectroscopy confirms structural integrity, while SEM and fluorescence microscopy reveal favorable adhesion and spreading of L‐929 fibroblast cells.

3D‐Printed Corneal Substitutes: Materials, Fabrication, and Preclinical Progress

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Successful clinical translation of 3D‐printed corneal substitutes relies on the interplay between the bioink properties, cellular component, and the fabrication process. These factors influence the critical properties of the construct, including optical transparency, mechanical stability, suture retention, that ultimately govern long‐term stromal ...

Neutrophil antimicrobial defense against Staphylococcus aureus. contribution of cathelicidin and the NADPH oxidase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Neutrophils are among the most important components of the innate immune response, which provides the first line of host defense. The antimicrobial potential of neutrophils has been traditionally divided into either non-oxidative or oxidative ...

3D Printed Photon Shield Assembly for Low‐Noise Visual Stimulation During Two‐Photon Imaging in Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
We present the Photon Shield, an open‐hardware system for low‐noise two‐photon calcium imaging during visual stimulation in mice. Combining a 3D‐printed headplate and rail‐mounted shield substantially reduces stray‐light contamination, as quantitatively verified. Functional validation confirms reliable cortical responses. Open design files enable broad

Linking Polyelectrolyte Modification and Enzyme‐Catalyzed Phenolic Acid Functionalization of Cellulose Fiber for Functional Foams

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Cellulose fibers functionalized using cationic poly(Dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (polyDADMAC) and laccase‐mediated ferulic acid system are processed into foams using different surfactants (Anionic, cationic, and non‐ionic). Fiber–surfactant interactions influence foam stabilization and porous structure formation during convective drying, producing

Towards the development of antimicrobial drugs acting by inhibition of pathogen attachment to host cells: A need for polyvalency [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 1989
The development of inhibitors of microbial attachment to target cells has been proposed recently as a possible novel approach to antimicrobial chemoprophylaxis and treatment. In this paper an attempt is made to contend that such artificial inhibitors must be polyvalent, i.e. capable of binding to the pathogen or its target by multiple bonds.

Engineering Microbial Particles for Next‐Generation Biomedical Platforms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Microbe‐derived particles (MDPs), which include extracellular vesicles, outer membrane vesicles, inclusion bodies, polysaccharide particles, and virus‐like particles, represent a rapidly expanding category of bioinspired nanomaterials. With their natural origin, intrinsic biocompatibility, and highly programmable functionality, MDPs serve as a ...
