A pleiotropic response associated with resistance of breast cancer cells to antineoplastic drugs and hormonal agents

Abstract A multidrug-resistant variant of the human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 exhibits multiple biochemical changes including reduced estrogen receptor and increased EGF receptor levels, overexpression of the putative drug efflux pump and cross-resistance to carcinogens, estrogens and antiestrogens .

The effects of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), 1,3 bis(2-chloroethyl)-1 nitrosurea (BCNU) and cyclophosphamide on plasma levels of corticosterone, prolactin and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were investigated. All the three drugs produce a remarkable adrenocortical activation but the duration of this effect is different.
