To the Editor.— A recent letter, "Diphenylhydantoin in the Treatment of Duodenal Ulcer" ( 219 :511, 1972), has encouraged me to express a long held hypothesis that both pernicious anemia and polycythemia are primarily of neurologic origin. In pernicious anemia the gastric mucosa is thin, pale, and atrophic.
