Objecfive evaluation of antitussive agents

Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 1965
Subjective evaluation of antitussives is unreliable. In the search for an ideal procedure for evaluation, several methods have been developed which use bronchial irritants for artificial cough production in selected subjects. The currently popular citric acid and the acetylcholine methods with healthy volunteers were re‐evaluated and in our hands were ...

The Use of Noscapine (Narcotine) as an Antitussive Agent

Diseases of the Chest, 1957
and similar compounds is based on a phenanthrene nucleus, whereas Noscapine is an isoquinoline derivative (related to papaverine). It is readily absorbed after oral or parenteral administration, disappears rapidly from the blood stream, and only traces appear in the urine. Its fate is unknown.

TRPV1 Antagonists as Potential Antitussive Agents

Lung, 2007
Cough is an important defensive pulmonary reflex that removes irritants, fluids, or foreign materials from the airways. However, when cough is exceptionally intense or when it is chronic and/or nonproductive it may require pharmacologic suppression. For many patients, antitussive therapies consist of OTC products with inconsequential efficacies. On the

Studies on the potency of various antitussive agents

Agents and Actions, 1977
Several antitussive agents were assessed for their cough-suppressant activity. Cough responses were obtained by electrically stimulating the lower brainstem, in cats lightly anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital or in unanesthetized midcollicular decerebrate preparations. Cough sounds were recorded with the aid of a microphone.

Clinical pharmacology of antitussive agents

Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 1962
The cough reflex as part of an integrated protective mechanism for adequate bronchoelimination is vital in maintaining the integrity of the pulmonary parenchyma. While it is undoubtedly true that more patients have died from an inability to cough effectively than from the act of coughing itself, adequate control of useless cough is often necessary in ...

PHARMACOLOGICAL STUDIES ON NEW SYNTHETIC ANTITUSSIVE AGENTS

Canadian Journal of Biochemistry and Physiology, 1958
In an attempt to overcome the inherent disadvantage of narcotic antitussive therapy, three basic alkoxy-alkyl esters of phenothiazine-10-carboxylic acid were synthesized and tested for pharmacological activity. These compounds possessed antitussive activity in the cat in the range of activity of codeine.

Latency of cough response as a measure of antitussive agents

Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 1967
The cough reflex was stimulated in selected healthy male subjects with a single nebulized threshold dose of citric acid. The essential components of the method were deep inhalation by the subjects and the measurement of the required time to elicit the cough reflex. Prolongation of latency was used as a measure of antitussive action.

Structure−Antitussive Activity Relationships of Naltrindole Derivatives. Identification of Novel and Potent Antitussive Agents

Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, 2008
We have previously reported antitussive effects of naltrindole (NTI), a typical delta opioid receptor antagonist, in a rat model. The ED50 values of NTI by intraperitoneal and peroral injections were 104 microg/kg and 1840 microg/kg, respectively, comparable to those of codeine.

[Cariogenic antitussive agents].

Schweizerische Monatsschrift fur Zahnheilkunde = Revue mensuelle suisse d'odonto-stomatologie, 1978
Nine cough mixtures available on the Swiss market and randomly chosen were tested telemetrically. With the exception of Sinecod all syrups effected immediate and long-lasting pH-depressions in interdental plaque. Patients should be informed on the pronounced caries-promoting potential of these medications.
