The Polyvalency of Crotalidic Antivenins [PDF]

open access: bronzeThe Journal of Immunology, 1939
Summary With American pit viper venoms the fatal dose for 20 gram mice injected intraperitoneally approximates that for 350 gram pigeons injected intravenously. No difference in time of onset and character of paralysis from very toxic and less toxic venoms, such as was observed in pigeons, was seen in mice.

Effect of the route of administration on the neutralizing potency of antivenins.

Toxicon, 1968
Abstract Using a variety of venoms, it was demonstrated that the route of administration has a decisive influence in the demonstration of the protective effect of a given antivenin. It is suggested that in testing the efficacy of an immune serum, both i.v. and i.p. administration should be given consideration.

COMPLICATIONS OF CROTALIDAE ANTIVENIN THERAPY

The Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection, and Critical Care, 1987
Polyvalent antivenin is the mainstay of treatment of serious snake envenomation. Its use, however, has been challenged as being unnecessary in minor envenomations and potentially hazardous due to allergic complications. Our institution routinely uses antivenin, and this report focuses on the allergic complications of this therapy.
