Abstract Squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal is preceded by a spectrum of premalignant lesions known as anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN). AIN is caused by infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV), and the pathogenesis mimics that of cervical cancer.
