There have been several significant advances in our understanding of aortic valve disease over the past year. Recent studies suggest that "degenerative" valvular aortic stenosis is an active disease process rather than an inevitable consequence of aging.

Surgical management of three diseases of the aortic root has improved considerably in the last 10 years. Results and prognosis are excellent following complete open heart repair of a fistula of a sinus of Valsalva. In supravalvular aortic stenosis surgical mortality is negligible when obstruction is localized.

Abstract Aortic valve disease encompasses aortic stenosis, aortic regurgitation, and congenital malformations. Aortic valve stenosis is a common problem among the elderly, and valve replacement is still the only treatment option for severe symptomatic disease.

The assessment of aortic disease
Journal of Atherosclerosis Research, 1964Summary In 220 aortas, the percentage of intimal surface showing disease was estimated by eye, and by tracing and planimetry. Planimetric measurement was reproducible, but visual assessment was extremely variable; it was shown that visual assessment of area is inaccurate as well as poorly reproducible.

The development of diagnostic biomarkers of acute cardiovascular disease remains an important topic of interest given potential use to aid in early diagnosis. Cardiac biomarkers of ischemia and heart failure have already proven to be clinically useful.

AORTIC STENOSIS Clinical suspicion of significant aortic stenosis even in the presence of a normal chest X-ray and electrocardiogram should lead to careful 2-D echocardiographic examination. The lesion can be adjudged mild and the subject probably certificated if the recording shows normal septal and posterior wall thickness, normal left ventricular ...
