A pleiotropic “stretch” phenotype is associated with metaxylem vessel element length, axial hydraulic conductance, root elongation, water utilization, and drought adaptation in maize

open access: yesCrop Science, Volume 66, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
Abstract We tested the hypothesis that metaxylem phenotypes influence drought adaptation in maize (Zea mays L.) through in silico modeling and empirical studies under water deficit in controlled environments and in the field. Substantial genotypic variation for metaxylem vessel element length (MVEL) was observed. Longer MVEL was correlated with reduced

Multi-Aspect Incremental Tensor Decomposition Based on Distributed In-Memory Big Data Systems

open access: yesJournal of Data and Information Science, 2020
We propose InParTen2, a multi-aspect parallel factor analysis three-dimensional tensor decomposition algorithm based on the Apache Spark framework. The proposed method reduces re-decomposition cost and can handle large tensors.

Monitoring mercury across the National Wildlife Refuge System using a biosentinel approach

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 4, May 2026.
We measured mercury concentrations in 1,356 dragonfly larvae collected from 30 National Wildlife Refuges across the United States and found wide variability among refuges, spanning the full range reported for other protected lands. Using a management‐focused mercury impairment index, 80% of refuges contained sites classified as moderate or higher risk.

Matrix Factorization at Scale: a Comparison of Scientific Data Analytics in Spark and C+MPI Using Three Case Studies

open access: yes, 2016
We explore the trade-offs of performing linear algebra using Apache Spark, compared to traditional C and MPI implementations on HPC platforms. Spark is designed for data analytics on cluster computing platforms with access to local disks and is optimized

Nurses' Role in Transitional Care During Intensive Care Unit Family Meetings for Patients With Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Nursing, Volume 82, Issue 5, Page 5319-5331, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim To describe nurses' roles in transitional care planning during intensive care unit (ICU) family meetings for patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV). Design A qualitative descriptive study. Methods Using secondary data from a trial of a decision aid about PMV, transcripts from 19 unstructured ICU family meetings were ...

Human tests for machine models: What lies “Beyond the Imitation Game”?

open access: yesJournal of Linguistic Anthropology, Volume 36, Issue 1, May 2026.
Abstract Benchmarking large language models (LLMs) is a key practice for evaluating their capabilities and risks. This paper considers the development of “BIG Bench,” a crowdsourced benchmark designed to test LLMs “Beyond the Imitation Game.” Drawing on linguistic anthropological and ethnographic analysis of the project's GitHub repository, we examine ...

Version [1.0]- [SAMbA-RaP is music to scientists’ ears: Adding provenance support to spark-based scientific workflows]

open access: yesSoftwareX
While researchers benefit from Apache Spark for executing scientific workflows at scale, they often lack provenance support due to the framework’s design limitations. This paper presents SAMbA-RaP, a provenance extension for Apache Spark. It focuses on: (

Determination of the Minimum Discard Volume in the Extraction of Blood Samples Through Arterial Catheters in Critical Patients

open access: yesNursing in Critical Care, Volume 31, Issue 3, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Background The critically ill patient requires multiple extractions through catheters, implying a substantial blood loss. The discard method continues to be a commonly used method in Intensive Care Units. However, there is no homogeneity in practice.
