Resilience of coastal wetlands to extreme hydrologic events in Apalachicola Bay

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
Extreme hydrologic events such as hurricanes and droughts continuously threaten wetlands which provide key ecosystem services in coastal areas. The recovery time for vegetation after impact from these extreme events can be highly variable depending on ...

The influence of freshwater inflow and seascape context on occurrence of juvenile spotted seatrout Cynoscion nebulosus across a temperate estuary. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2023
Spotted seatrout, a popular recreational sport fish in the southeastern United States, are affected by freshwater flow conditions and the availability of estuarine habitat.

Comparative Genomic Analysis of Three Pseudomonas Species Isolated from the Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea virginica) Tissues, Mantle Fluid, and the Overlying Estuarine Water Column [PDF]

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2021
The eastern oysters serve as important keystone species in the United States, especially in the Gulf of Mexico estuarine waters, and at the same time, provide unparalleled economic, ecological, environmental, and cultural services.

Draft genome sequences of two Halobacteriovorax strains isolated from Apalachicola Bay, Florida. [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiol Resour Announc
ABSTRACT Predatory bacteria are common in aquatic environments and associated with eukaryotic hosts. Here, we report draft genome sequences for two marine isolates, Halobacteriovorax sp.

Modeling sediment resuspension and transport induced by storm wind in Apalachicola Bay, USA

open access: yesEnvironmental Modelling and Software, 2009
Sediment is an important environmental factor for aquatic ecosystem and oyster productivities of Apalachicola Bay located in Florida, USA. Based on the data analysis in this study, surface wind speed is highly correlated to the turbidity of water column, which results from sediment resuspension and transport in the Apalachicola Bay.

Modeled Sea Level Rise Impacts on Coastal Ecosystems at Six Major Estuaries on Florida's Gulf Coast: Implications for Adaptation Planning. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
The Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM) was applied at six major estuaries along Florida's Gulf Coast (Pensacola Bay, St. Andrews/Choctawhatchee Bays, Apalachicola Bay, Southern Big Bend, Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor) to provide quantitative and ...

Association of multiple-antibiotic-resistance profiles with point and nonpoint sources of Escherichia coli in Apalachicola Bay. [PDF]

open access: yesAppl Environ Microbiol, 1997
A total of 765 Escherichia coli isolates from point and nonpoint sources were collected from the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve, and their multiple-antibiotic-resistance (MAR) profiles were determined with 10 antibiotics. E. coli isolates from point sources showed significantly greater resistance (P < 0.05) to antibiotics and ...

Evaluation of the flushing rates of Apalachicola Bay, Florida via natural geochemical tracers [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Chemistry, 2008
Abstract We used naturally occurring radium isotopes as tracers of water exchange in Apalachicola Bay, a shallow coastal-plain estuary in northwestern Florida. The bay receives fresh water and radium from the Apalachicola River, and mixes with Gulf of Mexico waters through four inlets.

Remote sensing analysis of rainstorm effects on sediment concentrations in Apalachicola Bay, USA

open access: yesEcological Informatics, 2011
Abstract Remote sensing of total suspended solids (TSS) by satellite techniques in estuaries and bays plays an important role in monitoring water quality over a large area. It is valuable to the management of coastal water environment and ecosystems.
