Embryonic and juvenile snakes (Natrix maura, Linnaeus 1758) compensate for high elevation hypoxia via shifts in cardiovascular physiology and metabolism

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, Volume 339, Issue 10, Page 1102-1115, December 1, 2023., 2023
Hypoxia suppressed heart rates at the end of incubation and altered respiratory quotients of juvenile snakes, but did not affect fitness‐related traits at hatching or at age 1 month. This suggests that embryonic physiological plasticity may facilitate responses to novel environments as species' ranges expand.

Genome‐wide phylogeography reveals cryptic speciation in the circumglobal planktonic calcifier Limacina bulimoides

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 12, Page 3200-3219, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Little is known about when and how planktonic species arise and persist in the open ocean without apparent dispersal barriers. Pteropods are planktonic snails with thin shells susceptible to dissolution that are used as bio‐indicators of ocean acidification.

Abstract Drawing on recent participant observation‐based data from the Northern Territory's Victoria River region, I propose that the coercive and custodial arms of the settler state are predominant features of, and constant and permanent forces of rupture in, remote Aboriginal life.
