Applied Numerical Modelling of Landscape Evolution in Anthropogenic Landscapes: A Systematic Review

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 9, September 2026.
This systematic review examines how landscape evolution models have been applied to analyse long‐term change in anthropogenic landscapes. The review evaluates modelling approaches, applications, limitations and key knowledge gaps to assess the potential of these models for long‐term landscape and risk management.

Deep Learning Models for Mapping Surficial Geology in Selected Physiographic Regions of New York

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 9, September 2026.
Deep learning models provide a faster, less resource‐intensive approach to mapping surficial materials. Though not a replacement for traditional mapping, the models and framework developed here can enhance the speed, consistency and quality of surficial geologic mapping when trained with high‐quality data, especially in glaciated terrain.

Hydrological Models Must Accurately Represent Processes in High‐Storage Watersheds

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 9, September 2026.
This project develops a ‘Similarity index,’ an indicator that evaluates the similarity level between hydrological model structures and observed watershed processes. Comparing this indicator for 36 distinct models across 424 US watersheds against their modeling performances [B1 and B2 for negative and positive correlation examples, respectively ...

Cratonic basins as effective sediment barriers in continent-scale sediment routing systems of Paleozoic North America

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Provenance studies demonstrate the important control of plate boundary mountain building on continental sediment routing systems. Less well understood is if subsidence and uplift in cratons also has the potential to affect the organization of sediment ...

Research Priorities for Robust Climate Assessments in the United States

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Scientific assessments play a critical role in synthesizing evidence to support evidence‐based decision‐making in many sectors and topics. For climate change, large‐scale assessments like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the United States (U.S.) National Climate Assessment (NCA) reports help many different users—from ...

Impacts of Transient Critical Zone Evolution on Landslide Susceptibility and Hazard Across the Utuado Batholith, Puerto Rico

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Landscapes in humid climates often experience rapid chemical and mechanical weathering that can change groundwater fluxes, drainage pathways, and frictional strength via alterations in subsurface mineral composition and matrix porosity. These changes to hillslope critical zone structure and strength should control landslide susceptibility ...

Amplified Cloud‐Phase Responses Over Global Mountain Regions Under Climate Warming

open access: yesAGU Advances, Volume 7, Issue 6, September 2026.
Abstract Changes in cloud phase can substantially affect cloud radiative feedbacks and precipitation processes, yet their responses to climate warming remain poorly understood, particularly over mountain regions. Using 20 years of satellite observations together with ERA5 reanalysis data, this study investigates changes in cloud fraction (CF), cloud ...

Comparative organic geochemistry of shale deposits of northern Appalachian Basin

open access: yesPetroleum Research
The organic-rich black shales in the Appalachian basin are a vital producer of natural gas. In this study, we present new multiproxy geochemical data from the Ordovician and Devonian black shales in New York (NY) and Pennsylvania (PA).

Decadal‐Scale Bathymetric Change in a Shallow Coastal Bay

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Coastal marshes and bays must accumulate sediment to maintain their position relative to mean sea level during periods of sea level rise (SLR). Resuspension of bay‐bottom sediment, which together with tidal inundation promotes marsh deposition, is sensitive to water depth, but quantitative measurements of bathymetric change across shallow bays
