Applanation Tonometry with and Without Fluorescein
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1980Some investigators have suggested that it is not necessary to be fluorescein when doing applanation tonometry. This is incorrect because, in order to visualize the apex of the tear order to visualize the apex of the tear meniscus which defines the applanated area, the tears must be stained with fluorescein. I found an average pressure of 11.72 +/- 3.20

THE ACCURACY OF CLINICAL APPLANATION TONOMETRY
Acta Ophthalmologica, 1978The differences between two careful applanation tonometries performed by one and by two observers, respectively, were compared. Two measurements by one observer differed by 2 mmHg or more in 8% of the pairs of measurements and by 3 mmHg or more in 2% of the pairs.

[Linearity of applanation tonometry].
Klinische Monatsblatter fur Augenheilkunde, 1984A method has been developed for measuring intraocular pressure continuously. By comparing the results with theoretical models it has been established that only viscoelasticity of the sclera and cornea is able to compensate for rapid pressure fluctuations, whereas facility does this only to a minor degree.
