Generations of computer scientists and practitioners have worked under the assumption that computers will keep improving themselves: just wait a few years and Moore's Law will solve your scaling problems. This reliable march of electrical-engineering progress has sparked revolutions in the ways humans use computers and interact with the world and each ...

We face an urgent need for new sources of efficiency in computing due to the diminishing benefits from semiconductor technology scaling on the one hand, and the need to keep up with the explosive growth in data on the other. The very workloads that drive the demand for computing across the spectrum hold out promise for new opportunities.

Hardware approximate computing
Proceedings of the 2017 International Conference on Compilers, Architectures and Synthesis for Embedded Systems Companion, 2017Approximate computing in hardware is generally aimed at power or energy optimization as the primary target. We suggest that hardware approximate computing can be more beneficial when area reduction is the primary target. Additionally, we advocate that the hardware approximation schemes which allow usage of high-level libraries for their sub-components ...

Secure Multiparty Computation of Approximations
ACM Transactions on Algorithms, 2001Approximation algorithms can sometimes provide efficient solutions when no efficient exact computation is known. In particular, approximations are often useful in a distributed setting where the inputs are held by different parties and may be extremely large.

On Approximate Computer System Models
Journal of the ACM, 1975A new treatment of the boundary conditions of diffusion approximations for interconnected queueing systems is presented. The results have applications to the study of the performance of multiple-resource computer systems. In this approximation method, additional equations to represent the behavior of the queues when they are empty are introduced.
