Screening of municipal effluents with the peroxidase toxicity assay

open access: yesDiscover Water
The peroxidase (Per) reaction is a quick and inexpensive biosensor for the screening of environmental contaminants and wastewaters. The purpose of this study was to screen various municipal wastewaters before and after 7 different types of treatment ...

Aquatic ecotoxicology: what has been accomplished and what lies ahead? An Eastern Canada historical perspective

open access: yesJournal of Xenobiotics, 2013
Our recent history shows that degradation of aquatic ecosystems essentially stems from industrialization, urbanization and increasing human populations.

Micro and Nanostructural Diversity of Lizard Osteoderm Capping Tissue in Relation to Mechanical Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows that lizard osteoderm capping tissue is a hyper‐mineralized hydroxyapatite layer consistently covering the superficial osteoderm surface in those species studied here, yet it varies greatly in morphology, nanostructure, and mechanical performance across species.

SiO2 and microparticle transport in a saturated porous medium: effects of particle size and flow rate

open access: yesApplied Water Science
SiO2 and polystyrene (PS) are carriers of microorganisms and metals in porous media, which can produce changes in groundwater quality and cause issues related to clogging of the porous medium.

Investigation on the Toxicity of Nanoparticle Mixture in Rainbow Trout Juveniles

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2023
The environmental impacts of nanoparticle mixtures in the aquatic environment is not well understood. The purpose of this study examined the sub-lethal toxicity of low concentrations (ug/L range) of selected nanoparticles alone and in mixtures in ...

Bio‐Inspired Molecular Events in Poly(Ionic Liquids)

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Originating from dipolar and polar inter‐ and intra‐chain interactions of the building blocks, the topologies and morphologies of poly(ionic liquids) (PIL) govern their nano‐ and micro‐processibility. Modulating the interactions of cation‐anion pairs with aliphatic dipolar components enables the tunability of properties, facilitated by “bottom‐up ...

Effect of background ions and physicochemical factors on the cotransport of microplastics with Cu2+ in saturated porous media

open access: yesScientific Reports
Microplastics (MPs) in subsurface environments are migratory and can carry heavy metals, increasing the extent of MP and heavy metal pollution. This study used quartz sand-filled column experiments to investigate the adsorption and cotransport behaviours

Spin‐Dependent Generation of Surface‐Bound Radicals Toward Selective and Long‐Lasting Water Purification

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study develops a novel atomic engineering strategy to fine‐tune the spin state of α‐Fe2O3 catalysts toward a medium‐spin state, thereby modulating peroxymonosulfate activation and selectively yielding surface‐bound radicals. Compared with free radicals, surface‐bound radicals exhibit moderated oxidation potential, extended lifespan, surface ...

Population Characteristics of the Upper Infralittoral Sea Urchin Arbacia lixula (Linnaeus, 1758) in Eastern Mediterranean (Central Greece): An Indicator Species for Coastal Water Quality

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2022
The black sea urchin (Arbacia lixula, Linnaeus, 1758) is a non-edible marine echinoderm of high ecological importance with the potential to affect marine ecological communities. A. lixula were sampled monthly for one year from the supralittoral fringe at
