Alternative Complement Pathway Inhibition by Lampalizumab

open access: yesOphthalmology Science, 2023
Purpose: Lampalizumab, an antigen-binding fragment of a humanized monoclonal antibody directed against complement factor D (CFD), is designed to treat geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration.

Impact fracturing and aqueous alteration of the CM carbonaceous chondrites [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Aqueous alteration of the CM carbonaceous chondrites has produced a suite of secondary minerals, and differences between meteorites in their abundance defines a progressive alteration sequence [e.g. 1, 2]. The means by which this water gained access

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Excimer laser processing of inkjet-printed and sputter-deposited transparent conducting SnO2:Sb for flexible electronics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The feasibility of low-temperature fabrication of transparent electrode elements from thin films of antimony-doped tin oxide (SnO2:Sb, ATO) has been investigated via inkjet printing, rf magnetron sputtering and post-deposition excimer laser processing ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Chlorogenic acid removal during aqueous processing of sunflower kernels

open access: yesGrasas y Aceites, 1993
The effect of incorporating specific stages to remove phenolic compounds during aqueous processing of sunflower, to obtain oil of good quality and meal of light color was studied. The aqueous process removes 88 % of the chlorogenic acid initially present

Mars Aqueous Processing System [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The Mars Aqueous Processing System (MAPS) is a novel technology for producing iron, high-grade metal oxides, and oxygen from Mars soils. These materials are suitable for use as-is and are also excellent feeds for further refining to produce steel, ceramics, glass, and light metals.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Impact of Aerosol-Cloud Cycling on Aqueous Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2019
Chemical processing of organic material in aqueous atmospheric aerosols and cloudwater is known to form secondary organic aerosols (SOA), although the extent to which each of these processes contributes to total aerosol mass is unclear. In this study, we
