Ecology and biogeography of bacterial communities associated with chloroethene-contaminated aquifers

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2012
Massive usage, along with careless handling, storage, spills and leakages made chloroethenes (CEs) one of the most abundant classes of groundwater contaminants.

Fracture evolution of a thick soft protection layer and the water inrush mechanism in overburden under longwall mining

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Through shear–tensile creep tests and viscoelastic modeling, the fracture evolution of thick soft protective layers is clarified. Results show thickness‐dependent rheological failure modes that govern four types of roof water inrush, providing a mechanism‐based framework for hazard prediction and control. Abstract In the Jurassic coal‐bearing strata of

Groundwater Vulnerability in the Piedmont Region under Climate Change

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2020
Groundwater vulnerability has increased in recent decades due to several factors, but mainly due to climate change. In this study, we applied a complex approach to determine groundwater vulnerability at a regional scale in the Piedmont region including ...

Dynamic geo‐hydrogeological monitoring‐driven situational awareness for real‐time floor water inrush risk prediction in deep mining

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The fused data extracted from the distributed monitoring system as the data basis, combined with dynamic geological data, are imported into a deep learning model. As the geological conditions of mining and excavation change, the risk of water inrush at the working face is retrieved in real time.

Performance assessment of a potential underground thermal storage facility: Case study of the closed mine Prosper‐Haniel in the Ruhr coal mining area in Germany

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the feasibility of an underground closed‐loop thermal storage facility at a post‐mining site, intended for seasonal heat energy storage. Its principal design shows water flow directions in winter and summer (1, 2), heat pumps (3), an upper water reservoir (4), and connecting pipes (5).

Review of Electrical and Gravity Methods of Near-Surface Exploration for Groundwater

open access: yesNigerian Journal of Technological Development, 2014
The theory and practice of electrical and gravity methods of geophysics for groundwater exploration was reviewed with illustrations and data examples. With the goal of reducing cases of borehole/water-well failure attributed to the lack of the knowledge ...

Rock mechanical properties under reconstructed deep in situ thermo–hydro–mechanical conditions: Implications for CO₂‐related injection scenarios

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The graphical abstract illustrates a reconstructed in situ thermo‐hydro‐mechanical (THM) framework in which porosity serves as the central variable linking stress, pore pressure, and temperature to evolving mechanical properties of rocks. Under burial conditions, in situ stress, pore pressure, and temperature jointly govern volumetric strain and ...

Karstic Aquifers and Climate Refugia: A Preliminary Outline History of Water-Management Strategy in Bronze and Iron Age Southeast Arabia

open access: yesOpen Quaternary
This paper attempts to set out a preliminary narrative of changing water exploitation and settlement in Southeast Arabia from the Umm an-Nar period to the Iron Age, with a particular focus on the 4.2ka event. It argues for long-term cultural and adaptive
