Identification of type II interferons and receptors in an osteoglossiform fish, the arapaima Arapaima gigas

Developmental & Comparative Immunology, 2023
In mammals, type II interferon (IFN; i.e. IFN-γ) signalling transduces through its specific receptors IFN-γR1 and IFN-γR2. In an osteoglossiform fish, the arapaima Arapaima gigas, three type II IFNs, IFN-γ-like, IFN-γ and IFN-γrel, and their four possible receptor subunits IFN-γR1-1, IFN-γR1-2, IFN-γR2-1 and IFN-γR2-2 were identified in this study. Mechanical properties and the laminate structure of Arapaima gigas scales

Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials, 2011
The Arapaima gigas scales play an important role in protecting this large Amazon basin fish against predators such as the piranha. They have a laminate composite structure composed of an external mineralized layer and internal lamellae with thickness of 50-60 μm each and composed of collagen fibers with ~1 μm diameter.

Protective role of Arapaima gigas fish scales: Structure and mechanical behavior

Acta Biomaterialia, 2014
The scales of the arapaima (Arapaima gigas), one of the largest freshwater fish in the world, can serve as inspiration for the design of flexible dermal armor. Each scale is composed of two layers: a laminate composite of parallel collagen fibrils and a hard, highly mineralized surface layer.

Aspiratory respiration in Arapaima gigas (Teleostei, Osteoglossomorpha): A reappraisal

Journal of Zoology, 1984
Recently it has been hypothesized that the osteoglossoid fish Arapaima gigas is unique amongst air‐breathing bony fishes in that it ventilates its respiratory swimbladder by aspiration. Aspiration, it was suggested, is effected by a diaphragm‐like septum lying below the swimbladder, and activated through lateral movement of the ribs.By using both high ...

Ostracoda impairs growth and survival of Arapaima gigas larvae

Aquaculture, 2019
Abstract The practice of indoor larviculture can be an alternative to enhance the rearing of arapaima larvae, improving their survival and the supply of arapaima juveniles for the grow-out stage. We aimed to evaluate different live microcrustaceans as feed for arapaima larvae to verify groups that can be safely used in laboratory trials, as well as ...

Tissue-dwelling philometrid nematodes of the fish Arapaima gigas in Brazil

Journal of Helminthology, 2009
AbstractThe nematode Rumai rumai Travassos, 1960 (Philometridae) is redescribed from the tissues of the mouth, tongue, operculum and head of the arapaima, Arapaima gigas (Schinz) (Osteichthyes), from Mexiana Island, Amazon River Delta, Brazil. Additional data on the related Nilonema senticosum (Baylis, 1922) from the same host and locality are also ...

Lower Lethal Temperature for Arapaima Arapaima gigas: Potential Implications for Culture and Establishment in Florida

North American Journal of Aquaculture, 2015
Abstract Arapaima Arapaima gigas is a large, predatory, obligate air-breathing fish native to the Amazon River basin. Aquaculture producers have identified this species as a candidate for commercial culture in Florida. For this species, a preliminary risk assessment using the Fish Invasiveness Screening Kit indicated a medium to high ...
