Dietary Probiotics Improve Growth, Immunity and Disease Resistance in Fish Against Aeromonas hydrophila Infection

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 6, Issue 2, April 2026.
Probiotics offer a promising alternative to antibiotics for managing Aeromonas hydrophila infections in aquaculture. Dietary supplementation of probiotics increases fish health, growth performance, and immune responses, while reducing antibiotic reliance in fish farming.

Implications for Osmorespiratory Compromise by Anatomical Remodeling in the Gills of Arapaima gigas [PDF]

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, 2013
ABSTRACTThe gill structure of the Amazonian fish Arapaima gigas, an obligatory air breather, was investigated during its transition from water breathing to the obligatory air breathing modes of respiration. The gill structure of A. gigas larvae is similar to that of most teleost fish; however, the morphology of the gills changes as the fish grow.

Exploring ecohydrology through the lens of local fishers in the Bolivian Amazon

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract The natural flow regimes of Andean‐Amazon tributaries play a vital role in sustaining their rich biodiversity and productive local fisheries, but ongoing and proposed alteration of river flow regimes by large dams threatens to negatively impact river ecosystems. Despite its importance, our understanding of how hydrologic variability influences

Feeding of juvenile pirarucu (Arapaima gigas, Arapaimidae) in their natural environment, lago Quatro Bocas, Araguaiana-MT, Brazil

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology
The stomach content of samples of juvenile Arapaima gigas was analized to obtain information about feeding in natural environments. This species occurs in the Amazonian basin, predominantly in floodplain environment. This is the case of the valley of the

Tensile Properties of 3D‐Printed Porous Bouligand Structured Polymer Plates

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, Volume 311, Issue 4, April 2026.
The tensile performance of porous Bouligand‐structured polymers is governed by pitch angle and fiber spacing. Experimental and FEA results reveal optimal strength and stiffness at 30∘$^\circ$, with mechanical efficiency scaling with density. These tunable bioinspired architectures bridge cellular solids and composites, offering lightweight, damage ...

Unprotected Waters: When Protection Fails In Freshwater

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Invasive species are a major driver of biodiversity loss in protected areas (PAs), yet their impacts in aquatic environments are less well documented. This study investigated the occurrence and distribution of nonnative freshwater fish in federal PAs in Brazil.

Fine‐Scale Genomic Divergence in the Amazonian Pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) Highlights the Need for Local Management Strategies

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 71, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Freshwater habitats face significant human disturbances globally, impacting food security and ecosystems. Protected areas can mitigate biodiversity loss, but limited data on population connectivity hinders conservation management. This study examines pirarucu (Arapaima gigas), a heavily exploited and threatened Amazonian fish, using genomic ...
