Starch Degradation Metabolism towards Sucrose Synthesis in Germinating Araucaria araucana Seeds [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Physiology, 1984
As starch is the main seed reserve material in both species of Araucaria of South America, A. araucana and A. angustifolia, it is important to understand starch breakdown in both embryo and megagametophyte tissues of Araucaria seeds. Sugar analysis by thin layer chromatography indicates that sucrose is the main sugar produced in both tissues.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Colonise the Nodules of Phosphite‐Treated Agathis australis

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Botany, Volume 64, Issue 1, March 2026.
Agathis australis (kauri), the only member of the ancient conifer family Araucariaceae in New Zealand, is colonised by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. The survival of A. australis is threatened by an Oomycota, Phytophthora agathidicida, the causal agent of kauri dieback. Phosphite injections into the trunk are the primary treatment for kauri dieback

Two cationic peroxidases from cell walls of Araucaria araucana seeds

open access: yesPhytochemistry, 1995
We have previously reported the purification and partial characterization of two cationic peroxidases from the cell walls of seeds and seedlings of the South American conifer, Araucaria araucana. In this work, we have studied the amino acid composition and NH2-terminal sequences of both enzymes.

Mortierella species from declining Araucaria araucana trees in Patagonia, Argentina

open access: yesForest Pathology, 2020
AbstractSince 2015, Araucaria araucana, an ecologically and economically important conifer native to Argentina and Chile, has suffered an unusual partial death of the crown throughout almost all of the distribution range in Argentina. No primary pathogen or pest was evident, associated with the phenomenon.

The Cinderella tree, Quillaja saponaria – A soap story

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 2, Page 439-451, March 2026.
Our current understanding of plants has been shaped by the entwining of different cultures. The Chilean soapbark tree, traditionally valued as a source of natural soap, was shown by serendipitous research in France in the 1900s to produce compounds that can boost the immune response to vaccines.

Effects of management practices on water yield in small headwater catchments at Cordillera de los Andes in southern Chile [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In several parts of the world, drinking water is obtained from springs in natural and managed mountainous forests. Since forests regulate quality as well as quantity of water, the effects of forest-management activities on water yield are an important ...
