Arbovirus Prevalence in Mosquitoes, Kenya

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2011
Few studies have investigated the many mosquito species that harbor arboviruses in Kenya. During the 2006-2007 Rift Valley fever outbreak in North Eastern Province, Kenya, exophilic mosquitoes were collected from homesteads within 2 affected areas: Gumarey (rural) and Sogan-Godud (urban). Mosquitoes (n = 920) were pooled by trap location and tested for

Genetic diversity and wing geometric morphometrics among four populations of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) from Benin

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2023
Background The impact of the arbovirus vector Aedes aegypti is of major concern for global public health as the viruses that it transmits affect millions of people each year worldwide. Originating in Africa, Ae.

Genomic and Micro-Evolutionary Features of Mammalian 2 orthobornavirus (Variegated Squirrel Bornavirus 1, VSBV-1)

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2021
Mammalian 2 orthobornavirus (VSBV-1) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen discovered in several exotic squirrel species and associated with fatal human encephalitis. The dynamics of VSBV-1 spread and evolution in its presumed natural hosts are unknown. Here,

The Antiviral Activity of Polyphenols

open access: yesMolecular Nutrition &Food Research, EarlyView.
Polyphenols demonstrate remarkable antiviral properties by effectively disrupting multiple biochemical processes essential for viral replication. ABSTRACT Polyphenols are secondary metabolites produced by a large variety of plants. These compounds that comprise the class of phenolic acids, stilbenes, lignans, coumarins, flavonoids, and tannins have a ...

The roles of apoptosis, autophagy and unfolded protein response in arbovirus, influenza virus, and HIV infections

open access: yesVirulence, 2019
Virus infection induces different cellular responses in infected cells. These include cellular stress responses like autophagy and unfolded protein response (UPR).

Role of the Vector in Arbovirus Transmission

open access: yesAnnual Review of Virology, 2014
Many arboviral diseases are uncontrolled, and the viruses that cause them are globally emerging or reemerging pathogens that produce significant disease throughout the world. The increased spread and prevalence of disease are occurring during a period of substantial scientific growth in the vector-borne disease research community. This growth has been

Safety and immunogenicity of freeze-dried human rabies vaccines: A phase 3 clinical trial of Zagreb and Essen regimes

open access: yesHuman Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics
Recently optimized freeze-dried rabies vaccines (Vero cell) are promising for rabies prevention; however, comparisons of Essen 5-dose and Zagreb 4-dose regimens are needed for clinical applications.

RNA-Seq analysis of blood meal induced gene-expression changes in Aedes aegypti ovaries

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2021
Background Transmission of pathogens by vector mosquitoes is intrinsically linked with mosquito’s reproductive strategy because anautogenous mosquitoes require vertebrate blood to develop a batch of eggs.

Lessons learned exploiting a multi‐year large‐scale data set derived from operational quality assessment of mosquito larval treatments in rain catch basins

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Results highlight opposite associations between percentages of positive rain catch basins treated with diflubenzuron and Bacillus against mosquito larvae and/or pupae and the intervals between treatments and inspections, and spatial variability in vector control.
