Endophytic and ectomycorrhizal, an overlooked dual ecological niche? Insights from natural environments and Russula species

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 250, Issue 6, Page 3946-3960, June 2026.
Summary Ectomycorrhizal fungi (EcMF) are key components of temperate ecosystems, and recent studies suggest that they can also inhabit non‐EcM plant roots as endophytes. We aimed to (1) provide new evidence of EcMF colonization of non‐EcM hosts, (2) offer direct microscopic confirmation of such endophytism and (3) assess factors influencing ...

Stability in tapia woodlands amid non‐native expansion: Integrating traditional ecological knowledge and remote sensing to track 73 years of tree cover in Madagascar

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 5, Page 1403-1418, May 2026.
Abstract Afromontane ecosystems, characterised by mosaics of fire‐adapted grassy ecosystems and fire‐sensitive forests, are biodiversity hotspots facing escalating pressures from non‐native species, climate and land‐use change. Madagascar's Central Highlands is one such hotspot, hosting woodlands dominated by endemic Uapaca bojeri (tapia) which are ...

Necromass chemistry drives the functional diversity of the necrobiome, resulting in microbe–organic matter feedbacks

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 5, Page 1339-1351, May 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract In temperate European forests, soil fungal communities, dominated by saprotrophic and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) species, represent almost 25% of soil organic carbon (C) in the soil.

Habitat Selection and Seed Dispersal by the Great Blue Turaco (Corythaeola cristata) in the Rainforests of Southern Cameroon

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 1, January 2026.
This study is the first to use telemetry to document the movements of the great blue turaco, a bird that plays an important role in seed dispersal throughout Africa's Congo Basin. We show how 3D vegetation structure influences the movements of four turacos and the resulting spatial patterns of seed dispersal.

Widespread Latent Presence of Cryptostroma corticale in Sycamore Maple in France

open access: yesPlant Pathology, Volume 75, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
Increasing drought events promote forest disease emergence, exemplified by Sooty Bark Disease (SBD) of Acer pseudoplatanus caused by Cryptostroma corticale. Across six French regions, the pathogen was detected in 13.6% of asymptomatic trees, indicating widespread latent presence that could trigger disease outbreaks under future drought and high host ...

Building growth models for even-aged stands on the basis of NFI dendrometric data

open access: yes, 2001
La mise au point d'outils d'aide à la décision pour la gestion des peuplements homogènes (monospécifiques, équiennes, issus de plantations ou de régénération naturelle assistée ou spontanée) se heurte pour certaines essences ou certains couples [essence,

A generalized modeling framework for spatially extensive species abundance prediction and population estimation

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract Spatially explicit estimates of species abundance and distribution are increasingly needed to support conservation planning and management across multiple spatial scales. We present a generalized modeling framework that bridges the gap between local studies and regional to national planning by compiling and harmonizing diverse datasets to ...

Analysis of species pair associations combined with functional traits reveals the effects of environmental filtering and biotic interactions in an unmanaged temperate forest

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 9, Page 2177-2192, September 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract We investigated the drivers of interspecific spatial associations among forest woody species by analysing how environmental filtering, hierarchical competition, limiting similarity and colonisation effects shape functional trait distributions and vary with successional ...
