Suitable habitat of Himalayan wolf in Upper Mustang, Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Decades ago, the Himalayan wolf Canis lupus chanco, a genetically distinct sub‐species of the gray wolf Canis lupus, faced persecution by local communities in the Nepalese Himalayas. Recently, wolf populations have returned and recolonized, sparking concerns about conflicts over livestock depredation, and emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive ...

Prioritizing areas for wolf management in Austria by modelling potential habitat and depredation risk

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
The recovery of wolf populations across Europe has reignited human–wildlife conflicts, particularly in countries such as Austria, where wolves have been absent for more than a century. Livestock depredation remains one of the primary sources of tension, and effective management requires a solid spatial basis for planning.

Road mortality mitigation for red wolves requires a landscape approach

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
In 1980, the red wolf Canis rufus was declared extinct in the wild. However, starting in 1987, a captive breeding program allowed for a reintroduction effort in and around Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge (Alligator River NWR), North Carolina, USA. In 2012 the wild red wolf population peaked at about 120 individuals.

Understanding thermal conditions provides context for the influence of habitat characteristics on gamebird winter ecology

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
The fundamental niche of an organism is regulated partially by its ability to cope with a range of thermal environments, which can be directly influenced by management across spatial scales and seasons. However, despite winter weather being a major source of mortality for many species in northern latitudes, the impact of thermal conditions on wintering

Fine‐scale spatio‐temporal niche partitioning enables coexistence of wild ungulates and livestock in a resource‐limited Himalayan landscape, India

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Understanding how wild ungulates share space with domestic livestock is central to conservation planning in Himalayan multi‐use landscapes. This study focuses on multi‐axis niche relationships among six wild ungulates: hangul Cervus hanglu hanglu, Kashmir musk deer Moschus cupreus, Himalayan goral Naemorhedus goral, kashmir markhor Capra falconeri ...
