Impacts of the Changing Ocean-Sea Ice System on the Key Forage Fish Arctic Cod (Boreogadus Saida) and Subsistence Fisheries in the Western Canadian Arctic—Evaluating Linked Climate, Ecosystem and Economic (CEE) Models

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
This study synthesizes results from observations, laboratory experiments and models to showcase how the integration of scientific methods and indigenous knowledge can improve our understanding of (a) past and projected changes in environmental conditions

Staying in place during times of change in Arctic Alaska: The implications of attachment, alternatives, and buffering [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The relationship between stability and change in social-ecological systems has received considerable attention in recent years, including the expectation that significant environmental changes will drive observable consequences for individuals ...

Growth of wild and domesticated Atlantic cod Gadus morhua reared under semi-commercial conditions

open access: yesAquaculture Environment Interactions, 2018
Genetic interactions between farmed escapees and wild fish represent a challenge to environmentally sustainable aquaculture. Breeding programs for Atlantic cod Gadus morhua have been initiated; however, the genetic response to selection, and therefore ...

Decline and northward shift in Arctic cod distribution associated with the changing climate around Greenland

open access: yesArctic Science
Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida Lepechin, 1774) is a key species in Arctic marine ecosystems, acting as a dominant mid-trophic link that transfers up to 75% of energy to higher trophic levels. It is therefore central to cultural identity, ecosystem function,

Choosing the observational likelihood in state-space stock assessment models

open access: yes, 2016
Data used in stock assessment models result from combinations of biological, ecological, fishery, and sampling processes. Since different types of errors propagate through these processes it can be difficult to identify a particular family of ...

Seasonal shifts in feeding patterns: Individual and population realized specialization in a high Arctic fish

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2019
Species with a broad and flexible diet may be at an advantage in a rapidly changing environment such as in today's Arctic ecosystems. Polar cod (Boreogadus saida), an abundant and ecologically important circumpolar Arctic fish, is often described as a ...

‘They Need to Hear You Say It’: Healthcare Professionals’ Perspectives on Barriers and Enablers to End‐of‐Life Discussions With Adolescents and Young Adults With Cancer

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT End‐of‐life conversations with adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer rarely occur without the guidance of healthcare professionals. As a part of the ‘Difficult Discussions’ study, focused on palliative care and advance care planning discussions with AYAs with cancer, we investigated the factors that healthcare professionals identify ...

Species richness of scaled Chrysophytes in arctic waters in the Tiksi Region (Yakutia, Russia)

open access: yesActa Biologica Sibirica, 2022
Searching for regularities in the species composition and diversity of scaled chrysophytes is crucial for monitoring Arctic waters within the concept of global climate change since these organisms are good indicators of environmental changes ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Fisheries-induced evolution in Northeast Arctic cod

open access: yes, 2005
We explore the evolutionary effects of fisheries on North-East Arctic (NEA) cod. It has earlier been shown that fisheries can change the cod’s age and size at maturation in two ways: first, by reducing the biomass, which may lead to faster individual growth and thereby earlier maturation (through phenotypic plasticity), and secondly, by altering the ...
