Boundary dents, the arctic circle and the arctic ellipse [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
The original motivation for this paper goes back to the mid-1990's, when James Propp was interested in natural situations when the number of domino tilings of a region increases if some of its unit squares are deleted. Guided in part by the intuition one gets from earlier work on parallels between the number of tilings of a region with holes and the 2D

Transcriptome‐wide analysis of circRNA and RBP profiles and their molecular relevance for GBM

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CircRNAs are differentially expressed in glioblastoma primary tumors and might serve as therapeutic targets and diagnostic markers. The investigation of circRNA and RNA‐binding proteins (RBPs) interactions shows that distinct RBPs play a role in circRNA biogenesis and function.

Seasonal energy exchange in sea ice retreat regions contributes to differences in projected Arctic warming

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Rapid and, in many cases, unprecedented Arctic climate changes are having far-reaching impacts on natural and human systems. Despite state-of-the-art climate models capturing the rapid nature of Arctic climate change, termed Arctic amplification, they ...

Saline Conversion and Ice Structures from Artificially Grown Sea Ice [PDF]

open access: yes, 1967
The environment of cold regions is generally viewed as inhospitable, primarily due to application of ideal processes and techniques suitable to temperate zones. The work herein is a step toward solving two environmental problems.

Artic-North Atlantic interactions and multidecadal variability of the thermohaline circulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Analyses of a 500-yr control integration with the non-flux-adjusted coupled atmosphere–sea ice–ocean model ECHAM5/Max-Planck-Institute Ocean Model (MPI-OM) show pronounced multidecadal fluctuations of the Atlantic overturning circulation and the ...

A radio telescope in the Arctic region [PDF]

open access: yesNature Astronomy, 2018
A former ALMA prototype antenna has a new lease of life in the harsh conditions of Greenland, where it will play a key role in very-long-baseline interferometry observations of supermassive black holes, explain Nimesh Patel and Paul Ho.

Targeting the MDM2‐MDM4 interaction interface reveals an otherwise therapeutically active wild‐type p53 in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study investigates an alternative approach to reactivating the oncosuppressor p53 in cancer. A short peptide targeting the association of the two p53 inhibitors, MDM2 and MDM4, induces an otherwise therapeutically active p53 with unique features that promote cell death and potentially reduce toxicity towards proliferating nontumor cells.

Arctic Rabies – A Review

open access: yesActa Veterinaria Scandinavica, 2004
Rabies seems to persist throughout most arctic regions, and the northern parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland, is the only part of the Arctic where rabies has not been diagnosed in recent time.

Balance characteristics of multivariate background error covariances and their impact on analyses and forecasts in tropical and Arctic regions

open access: yesMeteorology and atmospheric physics (Print), 2013
For variational data assimilation, the background error covariance matrix plays a crucial role because it is strongly linked with the local meteorological features, and is especially dominated by error correlations between different analysis variables ...

Overview of the Nordic Seas CARINA data and salinity measurements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Water column data of carbon and carbon relevant hydrographic and hydrochemical parameters from 188 previously non-publicly available cruises in the Arctic, Atlantic, and Southern Ocean have been retrieved and merged into a new database: CARINA (CARbon IN
