ARDEA—An MAV with skills for future planetary missions [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, 2020
AbstractWe introduce a prototype flying platform for planetary exploration: autonomous robot design for extraterrestrial applications (ARDEA). Communication with unmanned missions beyond Earth orbit suffers from time delay, thus a key criterion for robotic exploration is a robot's ability to perform tasks without human intervention.

A systematic review of goal attainment scaling implementation practices by caregivers in randomized controlled trials

open access: yesJournal of Patient-Reported Outcomes
Background Goal attainment scaling (GAS), an established individualized, patient-centred outcome measure, is used to capture the patient’s voice. Although first introduced ~60 years ago, there are few published guidelines for implementing GAS, and almost

Spatial, temporal and trophic resource partitioning among the four egret species (Aves: Pelecaniformes: Ardeidae) in a tropical wetland ecosystem, India

open access: yesJournal of Threatened Taxa, 2023
The diversity of micro-habitats in tropical wetlands allows the coexistence of several species. These sympatric species interact with each other, either directly or indirectly, to optimally use the available resources.

Recovery of great blue herons (Ardea herodias) within the Chesapeake Bay

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We surveyed great blue herons throughout the tidal reach of the Chesapeake Bay in 2013 and mapped 423 colonies supporting 15,094 pairs. The population has increased more than four‐fold since the mid‐1970s. Colony size has declined. Invasion of colonies by bald eagles may be driving a change in spatial structure.

Farther inland invasion of Finlayson’s squirrel Callosciurus finlaysonii (Horsfield 1823) poses a new conservation challenge for the endemic near threatened Calabrian black squirrel Sciurus meridionalis Lucifero 1907 (Rodentia: Sciuridae)

open access: yesNatural History Sciences
Understanding both native and non-native species ecology, including their distribution and interaction, is crucial for making informed decisions on conservation and management strategies, particularly for endemic threatened species.

Fusion or Confusion? Assessing the Impact of Visible‐Thermal Image Fusion for Automated Wildlife Detection

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
This study evaluates the performances of synchronous aerial visible (VIS) and thermal infrared (TIR) imagery for detecting great blue heron (Ardea herodias) nests and individuals using a YOLO11n model. VIS and TIR images were automatically aligned using deep learning, and both early and late fusion approaches were tested.

Microhabitat use by three species of egret (Pelecaniformes, Ardeidae) in southern Brazil

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
In the present study, we examined the role of different habitat components and their relationship with microhabitat use by three species of egret: Cocoi heron (Ardea cocoi), Great egret (Ardea alba), and Cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis), in wetlands of ...

Spatial Patterns of Avian Stable Isotopes Reveal Ecological Impacts of Climate and Land‐Use Change

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Increased feather δ15N values with pasture coverage reveal an elevated baseline δ15N in grazing landscapes, while broader isotopic niches in farmland habitats reflect agricultural expansion's significant influence on resource use patterns of the avian community.
