Arabidopsis defense against Botrytis cinerea : chronology and regulation deciphered by high-resolution temporal transcriptomic analysis [PDF]
Transcriptional reprogramming forms a major part of a plant’s response to pathogen infection. Many individual components and pathways operating during plant defense have been identified, but our knowledge of how these different components interact is ...

Urban Parks Act as Refuges for Avian Biodiversity in Chaoyang District, Beijing (China)
We assessed bird species richness, seasonal dynamics, and habitat associations across four urban parks in Beijing's Chaoyang District (China) using standardised point count surveys. A total of 68 bird species were recorded, with the highest diversity occurring in parks with extensive wetlands and marked seasonal variation during migration periods.

Colony Development and Density-Dependent Processes in Breeding Grey Herons
The density-dependent processes that limit the colony size of colonially breeding birds such as herons and egrets remain unclear, because it is difficult to monitor colonies from the first year of their establishment, and the most previous studies have ...

Habitat use by the Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) in eastern France
We analyzed the spatial relationship between the location and the size of the 69 Grey Heron colonies existing in 1994 in refuge areas in eastern France after recolonisation following the decline of the species in the 19 th century. We used five variables describing the hydrographical network,

The recent expansion of an avian invasive species (the Cattle Egret Ardea ibis) in Algeria [PDF]
This study identifies new information on the recent distribution of an invasive bird species, the Cattle Egret Ardea ibis, in Algeria. Breeding and wintering distributions as well as breeding numbers were obtained from large-scale surveys in 1999 and ...

Conserving the World's Specialist Riverine Birds
Specialist riverine birds constitute a diverse bird group globally, highly adapted to rivers and streams. They are at risk from multiple threats to rivers, riparian zones and river catchments including impoundment, hydropower and abstraction; land‐use changes including urbanization and agricultural intensification; traditional and emerging pollutants ...

The influence of a cooling water system on waterbird habitat use in a coastal environment
This study investigated the impact of a cooling water system at a nuclear power plant in northern Europe on coastal waterbird habitat use. In winter, the cooling water system provided preferential areas for waterbirds with warm productive waters, and, more importantly, with ice‐free areas.

Evaluation of heavy metal (As, Hg, Zn, Cu and Se) levels in wild birds of prey and aquatic habitats
Birds are used as bioindicators to determine the negative effects of environmental pollution on human, animal, and environmental health. Among the terrestrial bird species in the study are: the common buzzard (Buteo buteo); black kite (Milvus migrans ...
